Chapter Seventeen: Lost cause

Seth had arrived minutes after Rea was placed in her room. Sam took him to her, trying to get Seth to stay conscious. He hauled the young boy through the rickety corridors of the home.

Her bedroom was at the end of the hallway, making the seemingly endless trek longer. Her crooked door was still open from where Sam had rushed out moments ago.

Rea Uley's mind was cold. The thoughts that usually go hurling around in her head couldn't bring her warmth because for the first time in years, Rea Uley had a emptiness in her head and it was terrifying.

She could feel every second sluggish move by but every minute seemed to pass at a million miles per hour. And yet, non of it felt real; nothing did.

She could feel everything around her slowly slip away, she tried to fight it but it was inevitable. The warmth of the sun pushing through the thick blanket of clouds to reach past her window grew colder. The ticking of her alarm clock which had hit many times in her refusal to wake up for the three o'clock patrols grew numb. The bed of which she lied up felt as it was being stolen from underneath her, she felt as if she was floating to the heavens above her.

Rea Uley was a lost cause.

She was already so far gone that she didn't notice the bed dip down with a new weight next to her. Nausea started to drift away from Seth as he watched her. He knew that it was his fault. And it was in that moment that he made a silent vow to himself: Her above all.

Slowly it all came back. It was strange: Rea felt like she was inside a TV stuck on static. No- scratch that, she was static. Her whole body was numb, but it was relieving to the young girl. She could feel her surroundings again.

At first it was her fingertips, she knew she could move them as the static slowly left, rising and escaping her arms. Normality slowly filled Rea Uley. It was in that moment that she heard the gentle breathing besides her, the warm air hitting her shoulder in a repeated pattern. It was comforting, a sense of realty washing away the plague that consumed her.

The first thing she saw was the massive crack in her ceiling that Sam still hadn't gotten around to fixing. She used to try to fling hair clips up in the crack until at least ten fell on her face in the night, she had never screamed so loud.

She tried shifting herself to see what the lump in her bed was but her limbs didn't seem to respond. It wasn't until the fourth attempt that it worked. She opened her eyes as she rolled over.

"Seth?"

"Hey sleeping beauty. Welcome back to the land of the living."

"What happened? Why are you in my bed? We didn't, did we?"

"No, no, no! Its just, the..." he stuttered out, try the find the right words.

"Imprint bond?"

"Yeah."

Rea cussed under her breath. How could she let herself become a victim to a stupid soulmate bond? Was she really that weak?

"I'm sorry... I really am."

"Sam's gonna murder you."

"I know."
