CHAPTER TWENTY THREE: CARTER MEETS THE AFTERMATH PRT.2

❝ you are the sunshine in these dark days. ❞

"SO, YOU TWO are official now, huh?" Lucas asked as the pair sat in Topanga's across from each other. The pair had decided to sit together and just relax after Texas, like they would always do after anything went down with the rest of the group. Lucas and Carter liked to believe they were the most sane ones.

"He asked me on the roof in a fort," Carter bragged, twirling Farkle's necklace with her fingers and smiling. "How's things with Riley and Maya?"

Lucas sighed and swiped a hand through his hair. "Confusing for sure. I had just always thought of things with Riley, and now that Maya's in the mix and they're both just so different—"

"You don't know what to feel." Carter finished for him, and he smiled in relief at his best friend.

"At least you get what I'm saying, Cart," said Lucas.

Despite it all, Lucas and Carter's dynamic hasn't changed much at all. In the back of Carter's mind she couldn't help but wonder what it would've been like to had fallen for Lucas instead, yet the realization of having to be in a cat fight with Riley and Maya over it snapped her out of the daze.

It was no secret Lucas admired Carter in many ways. Truth be told, the Texan boy hadn't really abandoned the crush on her, he doubted anyone really could. Analyzing how damn scattered his emotions were had forced him to take a few steps back from Carter, and it was probably for the best.

The girl was just so smart, it was so easy for her to deduce everything down so quick and simply that it made people doubt her. Unlike the majority, Lucas found it to be helpful at the best and worst of times, and couldn't help but be drawn to that big brain of hers in his time of emotional crisis.

"I've gotten answers from pretty much everyone else," Lucas started. "You know, about—"

Carter let her jaw drop, and snorted in amusement and disbelief. "Oh my God! Lucas, are you seriously asking me who I'd pick if I were you?"

He playfully winced, and tilted his head with a slight recreation of Carter's own puppy dog eyes. "Please? I'm curious!"

The genius rolled her eyes at her friend's antics, but sighed in defeat. "Alright, alright, you really wanna know who I'd choose?"

Lucas was at the edge of his seat. "Yes!"

Carter thought for a few moments, and took a sip of her vanilla milkshake. After a quick pros and cons list and elimination tactics, she looked up from the table and spoke. "Maya. Definitely Maya."
