Glossary

This is a list of name meanings and so forth. If you're new, you don't have to memorize these because your head will explode. Just go back here every now and then.

Some of the names, I admit that I just make up but most have real meanings. I don't speak Chinese and English is my second language, just sayin' huehue

Important Names:

Yin Hua Lei
陰- yīn - yin (the negative principle of yin and yang), feminine, moon, hidden [surname]
華 - huá - abbr. for china / magnificent / splendid [Yin family's generational name]
蕾 - lěi – bud 

Xia Yu Heng
夏-Xia - summer [Current dynasty and name of country]
雨 – yǔ - rain [Royal family's current generational name for males]
恆- héng - permanent / constant / fixed

Bai Chen Rong
百- bǎi - hundred / numerous 
晨 - chén - morning 
榮- róng - glory, honour, flourish, prosper

Xia Lian Bei
夏 -Xia - summer
濂 - lián - waterfall
卑 - bēi - humble, inferior

For this novel, I used the traditional generational names on important characters. A generational name is different from the surname as the surname is shared by everyone in the clan but the generational name (i.e the Yu in Xia Yu Heng, the Hua in Yin Hua Lei, the Qi in Yin Fang Qi) is the name shared by people in the same generation of the clan. Notice how all the Xia brothers' names has Yu and Yin Hua Lei and her cousins all had Hua and so on and so on.

杲勒- gǎo lè - to lead while shining brightly [Imperial daughter Gao Le]

都梁- du liáng - capital and the bridge [Emperor Du Liang Xia Chun]

義安  - yì ān - justice and peace [Empress Yi An]

禱 - dǎo - prayer [First Prince, Dao Wang]

諧 - xié - harmonious [Third Prince, Xie Wang; Xia Yu Sheng]

暢- chàng- free / smooth [Ninth Prince, Chang Wang; Xia Yu Heng]

鳳- fèng- pheonix [Feng wang shu, Imperial Uncle]

Special Note:
The numbering of the royal sons and daughters in this novel doesn't distinguish between genders. For example, Xia Luyoung (who is a girl and often called Tenth Princess) is the tenth child of the Emperor in general, regardless if her older siblings were boys or girls. She came after the Ninth Prince (boy obviously). And after her is the Eleventh Prince (also a boy). Did I explain it clearly? o.O

Consort Ranking
(I inserted this here for reference only and isn't really a major part in the novel)

Emperor's harem (highest to lowest):

-Empress (mother of the world)
-Imperial Noble Consort (other novels use Head Consort)
-Imperial Consort (given to any woman in the harem who gave birth to a prince)
-Consort (default title for high ranking noble women who entered the harem)
-Imperial Concubine (default title for lower ranking noble women/official's daughters once they enter the harem)
-Palace Maids (yep, these girls are technically still part of the harem. From first class to the lowest)

Prince's harem:

-Princess Consort (Wangfei; can be used interchangeably with Imperial Consort which is different from the Emperor's woman with the same title)
-Consort (usually noble women with high rank)
-Concubine (lower in status than a Consort)
-Tongfang (servant girls who serve the prince in bed, can be elevated to concubine position)
