Chapter 40: The battle of mind and heart

One week later...

The massage came at random and we partially wondered if it was a trap or not. This wasn't a message about the demon monster, it was about the order, or at least a resistance. The message came from one of the largest border cities. My old home, before I was given a new life and identity. No one talked much that morning until we heard movement coming from Vin's room. Minutes later she came out alongside Chris who looked like he had been through hell.
"They got the message, I had to relive that moment of my life over and over again so before you say anything I will drag myself into that battle if I have to." He growled. I kept quiet, everyone kept quiet. We all knew what had happened to him and his family, out of everyone here he had lost more than the majority. I noticed that Vin was partially trembling and had a semi-distant expression. I knew that she had most likely tried to take some of his pain away from his at the cost of her own mind. If that wasn't devotion, I don't know what was. We set out towards the call and were surprised to find the city in ruins compared to how it would've normally looked. I noticed a small encampment of order soldiers that were protecting what seemed to be a type of generator, we needed to make sure that the power was completely gone in order to get Mako, and a few other sea monsters, into the sewer systems to gain control of the underground as the flying monsters, led by Artemis, had control of the air. I motioned for Fang to follow me and she seemed happy to do so. After the incident, Fang became surprisingly submissive for a hellhound and was exited when I showed signs of not being angry towards her. I feel that she thought it was her fault that everyone was captured by the order and wanted to make up for it. Whatever her case was she was about to shoot way higher than made up.
I nodded towards Fang and she ran towards the guards who shot at her. Now I should be worried, but that isn't actually Fang, Fang is right behind the guy in the back because Sarah was using her magic to "trick" the soldiers. Once the soldiers were unconscious a small group of harpies and other bird monsters swooped down and claimed a husband for themselves. Usually humans learned to accept their wives, while it can be scary at first after mating a harpy tends to have a gentle side to them. Besides, they get out of the war early, this was just the start.

I walked into the generator room and found one of the more sickening images that I've witnessed. I summoned a sword of pure light and began to cut away at the bonds that held a monster girl. The reason for my worry was that this was a raiju and the fact that my magic wasn't forcing me on the ground with mind numbing electrical pleasure was worrying.
