Chris's point of view...
The sounds of the onslaught echoed in my mind almost as loudly as the night my family was slaughtered. Vin has done what she could to minimize the guilt but it wasn't doing much. As much as I hated the order it still made me feel terrible to see what happened to those soldiers. Their armor was designed to detonate on command whether the wearer wanted to or not. Those soldiers also were brainwashed by the order, almost every human who was born in a settlement was. Some rich people didn't know that there were monsters besides kobolds. There had been a time where even I didn't know anything the order didn't want me to. The moment honestly brings a smile to my face and tears to my eyes.
Eight years ago...
Many people didn't understand the beauty in the world that existed outside of the walls. The order made massive cities for us but when I looked around I felt as if something was missing. One day there was a loud crash and a crack formed in the wall. We were nowhere near large enough to be a major priority to the order so the only thing they did was station guards to keep people from venturing out.
One night the guards got drunk and passed out. Curiosity got the best of me and I slipped through the crack and ventured outside for the first time.
The air was cool, I had never felt a breeze like this in my life.
I head a twig snap and I quickly turned to see a tall woman with skin that resembled coal and eyes that had fire jetting from them.
"Damn... I was hoping for a better opening than this." The woman sighed.
Fear shot through me and I was paralyzed where I stood. The order was right and this monster was about to eat me alive.
"Normally I would've pinned you down and had my way with you but it's been so long since I've even seen a human that I think we should just talk first." The woman smiled and revealed sharp teeth. The woman then frowned. "Are you lost? I don't mean you any harm, if anything the orders' rule made my kind more sweet and kind towards humans."
The monster took a step towards me and I fell to the ground and covered my eyes.
"Forgive me chief goddess! I don't want to die like this! I don't want to be damned for eternity!" I cried.
I felt as I was pulled into the arms of the monster and I expected to be crushed or cut into, but that didn't happen.
"I hope you know that the chief goddess left the order a long time ago after they started counting angels as monsters." The hellhound chuckled.
I opened my eyes and tried my best to appear touch.
"Wha- what do you know of the chief goddess, demon?!" I demanded.
The monster let out a laugh that was awfully sweet despite her physical appearance.
"Human, if I were a demon you would've been violated until you lost consciousness. Hell, by the time you awoke you would be so far in the demon realm that you wouldn't know which direction was civilization and which one wasn't."
The thought of the demon realm sent shivers down my spine.
"Human, the demon realm isn't actually hell, I would know. Even if it was, I would protect you." The monster smiled.
"What makes you think I want your protection?"
"The fact that you're gripping my arm tighter whenever you're scared tells me everything I need to know about you."
I looked towards my hand and sure enough it was gripping the monster.
"St- still I'm just going to go home and beg the elders for forgiveness. I'll forget this ever happened and I'll live out the rest of my life!" I argued.
"Really?" The monster asked.
"The location where you lived is known as purgatory by the monsters here. Nothing has changed since the day it opened and any major accidents result in the population being called in for memory erasing. The reason why you think your home is perfect is because it was designed so that you wouldn't be able to have a negative thought in your mind. On paper that might be blissful, but in reality it's so easy to abuse." The monster explained.
"How?" I asked.
"Has anyone ever been arrested in your town?"
I shook my head.
"That's where you're wrong. Thanks to these ears and my nose I can tell what's happening on the other side of the wall. In reality it's very easy to get in trouble with the authorities there. Those who are arrested are either experimented on, have their memories wiped and be brainwashed into soldiers, or straight up shot." The monster explained.
I felt tears in my eyes. "You're lying!" I snapped.
"I am a hellhound. My species' home is either volcanic areas... or graveyards. The stench of death drew me here and finally I know why."
The hellhound used a claw to tilt my head up.
"Human, if you go back there you will die, if you go with me you'll be safe, protected, ...even loved. Doesn't that sound so much better than what you've lived through?"
I nodded and choked back a sob.
The hellhound used her soft paws to wipe away my tears.
"Good boy." She whispered.
