"Sometimes, the bad guys win....."

Àwèlé's family members were distraught and miserable. It was like the heavens knew that something bad had happened to the young woman,  for it rained heavily on the day of her death and consistently for days afterwards. Search parties were sent out daily to look for her, delegates were sent to nearby villages in case she had ended up there.  Even the Riverside was combed carefully and repeatedly, but to Adéoba and everyone else's  relief, her body wasn't found floating in the river. Adéoba, because his men would put two and two together, and her parents because it gave them hope that she was alive somewhere.
Bit by bit, steadily, their hopes began to dwindle, some people had given up completely, already referring to her in the past tense. Using "was" instead of "is" and telling her family to move on.

Her poor mother cried daily, praying and pleading that Olódùmarè would bring her little girl home, but it was all in vain. Days, weeks, months passed. And still no sign of her daughter. Àwèlé's father had begun to fall ill sporadically, his age telling on him. Her brothers were not left out, choosing some days to go look for their little sister even months after she had disappeared.

Exactly one year after Àwèlé "disappeared", Adéoba was crowned King of Oyogun* village. His crowning was controversial, as it was the first time a prince was crowned without a queen to rule with him. But the untimely death of the King had made the king makers desperate. Moreover, since Àwèlé disappeared, Adéoba had been introduced to many women and girls by his step mother , but all her efforts were useless. The prince still had Àwèlé in his heart. Even though he'd killed her, his obsessive heart still hadn't let her go. So he became the first King without a queen to rule beside him.  If Adéoba was a bad lover, he wasn't any better when it came to ruling his people. His reign was hard and he ruled with an iron fist. Times were hard and many revolutions arose again and again. But they were all squashed mercilessly and publicly, so as to deter others.
Maybe he had always been like this,  cruel and unforgiving. Or maybe His acts of murder had sparked some sort of madness in him,  we do not know. What everyone in and around Oyogun knew was that they had crowned a monster.

PS; Oyogun was recommended by my sister(thanks @equilled) that I didn't include the name of their village in my previous chapters. If I did, and it is different from Oyogun, please note that the name of the village has been changed.
