*Meanwhile in ìlúogbón *
*Two years ago*
Foládèlé began to whistle as she walked to the stream , but she caught herself in time. Her father had warned her that it was wrong to whistle in the morning like a sluggard. She cast a guilty look around to see if anyone had seen her whistling, as if her father would suddenly appear to scold her for it. When she'd satisfied her anxious mind, she continued walking towards the stream. Unconsciously stopping to smell the flowers and plants on the way. The stream was quiet, as it was way too early for fetching water, but not for Foládèlé. She wanted to finish her chores earlier than usual so that she could convince her father to let her visit her friends .
He considered those visits a pure waste of time. But Foládèlé had to see her friends. She wanted to hear more about the girl that went missing in a town some days away, as she hadn't been able to fully listen to the news fully the other day, her mother had summoned her back home to join in the cooking.
She shuddered as she dipped her feet into the cold water, small waves hitting her legs. From the corner of the eye, she spotted a nice looking piece of ànkárá floating in the water, it was clearly expensive and was not for commoners like her family. Her interest piqued, she moved closer to see more of the cloth but stopped short at the sight before her, a startled gasp escaping from her lips.
The piece of ànkárá wasn't a piece at all. It was part of an ìró. And wrapped in that ìró was a beautiful girl, partly on the shore and half submerged in the water, as if she had been trying to crawl out of the water before she....
Died?
No. No, she wasn't dead. Foládèlé could see her chest moving up and down with new breaths, but the girl was tired. Deathly so. Her lips were purple and her breaths came as if she had to fight to take them. Foládèlé, without a second thought, ran back towards the village, intent on getting help from the villagers.••• ••• ••• ••• ••• ••• ••• ••• ••• ••• ••• •••
Àwèlé's head was pounding seriously. She felt like she'd been bludgeoned repeatedly. She tried to rub out the ache in head, but she began to panic when her arms failed to rise off the bed. She opened her mouth to scream but her throat failed her, only managing to produce a frail, incoherent sound.
As if sensing her panic. A young girl ran into the room. She stopped short when she saw that the stranger they had saved was awake, smiled and exited the room.
Àwèlé was still struggling when the girl returned with another man. He was slightly stopped and his face had the lines of age. He wore the all- white garb of an Òsun worshipper. He smiled at her and she immediately felt relaxed.
"Don't be afraid. I am Òsunyémisí. I am here to help you"
Àwèlé nodded to show that she understood. Òsunyémisí moved over to her and held her wrists, checking for any illnesses in her system.
The girl had been holding in her questions but spoke when she saw no concern on Òsunyémisí's face.
"What is your name?"
Àwèlé opened her mouth but decided to lie.
"Àbèbí" she croaked. She knew that they would have heard of a missing girl, Àwèlé. So, she changed her name to protect herself. Òsunyémisí and the girl smiled, pleased that she still remembered her name. The girl's name was fìwàshadé. The questions continued.
"Where are you from, Àbèbí?"
Àwèlé scrunched up her face, pretending to be deep in thought. Then she gasped, placing a confused look on her face.
"I. I do not remember"
Òsunyémisí moved closer and placed a hand on her shoulder. "It's okay, child. You will remember soon. Is there anything else you remember?"
Àwèlé thought about it again, then shook her head with sadness on her face.
"No." She felt really guilty about lying but she couldn't afford to let Adéoba find her before she was ready.
Fìwàshadé clasped her hands around Àwèlé's. "Do not worry Àbèbí,you have a home with us until you remember where you came from. Everything is going to be alright"
Àwèlé couldn't help it, she burst into tears, she was moved by these kind people who could give a stranger a home and accept her without second thoughts. She vowed to repay them in the future.
But for now, she would bid her time and she would wait, and she would plan.••• ••• ••• ••• ••• •• ••• ••• ••• ••• ••• •••
Àwèlé, now Àbèbí had been living in ìlúogbón for weeks when she began to feel nauseous and tired periodically. Her appetite was fluctuating and her joints began to ache. Three weeks exactly to the day she was found, Òsunyémisí called her over to his shrine. When she got there, the look on his face gave her a great cause for concern. He cleared his throat after a while and began.
"Àbèbí, when last did your monthly visitor come?"
Àwèlé was shocked, why was he asking about her period? She wanted to ask him if it was any of his business, but choked on her words when it dawned on her.
"Are you saying?....." She trailed off
Òsunyémisí nodded, a grim look on his face, and uttered six words that sent Àwèlé's world crumbling around her," Àbèbí, I think you are pregnant."
A/n: dun dun duuuuuun!
Show of hands if you didn't see that coming😝
Now we know that Àwèlé is alive for sure. But she might be pregnant. Wow.
