Memories

Drew

"Mommy, Mommy!" A six-year old Eve yelled, tugging at Mom's sleeve.

"Sweetie," She began. "I'm in the middle of an important conversation."

Eve looked at her, tears forming in her eyes. But she never cried. She simply waited and waited for the important conversation to be over. After a while, she was ushered out of the room.

I had found her sitting on a bench outside the office, her legs swinging as she contained her large amount of energy.

"Mommy's having an important conversation." She said. "I wasn't allowed to stay in there."

I knelt down beside her. "Who was Mommy with?"

She shrugged her shoulders. "They never introduce me."

"Come on." I said, taking her hand. She was sad, and I knew just how to cheer her up.

"Good afternoon. This is Treats and Beats. How may I help you?" A female answered after the second ring.

"Yes, can you please tell me who is playing this afternoon?"

"Hold on just one second." She said. Her voice quickly came back on the line. "Sir, I'm quite sorry. The musician that was supposed to be playing today cancelled."

I sighed. "Can you tell me who it was supposed to be?"

And then she said it. Eve's code word.
