Part Nineteen

Hazel couldn't sleep last night, because she was constantly thinking about Mason. It makes her really nervous that she has to ask him to come over. What if he doesn't want that?

He is talking to his friends when Hazel finally finds him. She has been looking everywhere for him. She is too shy to walk to them, so she waits instead. After a couple of minutes, they start to seperate and then he's finally alone. Mason waves at her.

'Hey Hazel! What is up?'

'So I thought about your idea, and I would really love that-'

'But?'

'I don't know if my mom is going to let me, because she has never met you.'

'Ah, I get that. So what's your plan?'

'I thought you could come over after school, introduce yourself and all that.'

'That's a good one!'

'If she has seen you, she is more likely to accept it.'

'Wonderful! So I drive you home after school?'

'Yes and I'm sure you are welcome to eat with us!'

'I'm looking forward to it!'

'Me too.'

They look up to each other and smile. He's wearing a black t-shirt with jeans, it looks very good on him. Mason sees she is checking him out and laughs.

'You little creep.'

'What?'

He laughs while he walks away. Please just stay a little longer, she thinks, but he is already out of her sight. Why can't he stay with her once? He always rushes off and then he disappears in the distance. She only has to survive five hours of school and then she has him all to herself for a couple of hours.

She hasn't heard Rebecca talking about him anymore, but she absolutely doesn't mind that. She would rather hear nothing about Mason from her. It makes her aware of the fact that she is meeting up, in secret, with him. The guilt feeling still hasn't fully left her.

When she walks down the hallway, she sees Mason in the English classroom. He's talking to the teacher. Hazel likes the fact that he's also nice to the teachers, especially the English teacher, they seem to get along very well. It is probably because she is quite young, so they connect on a different level than the old teachers. She would hate it if he would be very annoying in classes and interrupt the teachers all the time. He's popular but polite and that is a good thing in her opinion. It makes him very attractive.

She doesn't want to make it look like she was stalking him, so Hazel quickly moves on. If she would really be allowed to go to California, she would be so happy. Never in her whole entire life has anyone asked her on a trip. The only trips she had were either with her parents or with school. It excites her that she's finally found a good friend to do things with. It is also a confirmation that her loneliness had nothing to with her, because she's capable of making friends, she just proved that. All the other people on her old school were just mean. Mason is someone who does care about her feelings, he wants her to be happy, because that is what true friends do. They are supposed to be there for you whenever you need them. Hazel finally realized that, and she's ready to live a happy life, with nice people.

After a long time of living up to the standards of others, she finally chose to be herself. No one is going to ruin her happiness this time, because she knows what she's worth.
