These creatures are minor devils or spirits.
They inhabit abbeys and religious houses that have become wanton and over-luxurious. Their aim is to tempt the monks and brothers from their life of piety into drunkenness, gluttony and other excesses so that their victim's soul will be damned.
They have also been known as the Buttery Spirits. They also can inhabit inns and taverns, corrupting and exposing tavern keepers.
