Chapter 8: A Dangerous Encounter

Skylar POV

The next morning, I awoke to the sound of birds chirping and the good memories of last night: singing campfire songs (even though we weren't by a campfire) with Hiro and the gang, eating a ton of aunt Cass's food until we couldn't eat another morsel, and laughing at Fred's jokes all night long. I smiled at the thought of Hiro and how he kept looking at me all night long, how he'd smile at me, and look at me with his honey-brown eyes... I started to dream about him as I stayed in my bed, my hands cupped under my chin, and my elbows resting on the pillow that laid in my lap. But my sister had to ruin my train of thought.

"C'mon, sis! You're gonna be late!" I suddenly looked at the clock: 7:15!

"Aw man!" I yelled as I hussled into yesterday's jeans, a gray tee, and yellow high tops. But I kept saying to myself,

"Skylar, no! Do not think of Hiro as dreamy! He's just a friend!" I threw on the charm bracelet and I frantically brushed my hair and teeth simultaneously and ran to the kitchen to grab a granola bar for breakfast. My mom left for work early today, so me and Kagomi had to lock up the house. We walked for part of the way to school.

"So..." Kagomi started. I looked at her suspiciously.

"Yea?" I asked

"How'd it go last night?" She asked, smiling. I raised my eyebrows at her but answered,

"Well, I sang for the guys and they loved it! They encouraged me to go forward with performing in the SFAM showcase!"

"Wow! That's cool! Are you really gonna go with it?" Kagomi congratulated me but then asked me very seriously.

"Well, at first, I planned to...but then all these thoughts about how I'll mess up and embarrass myself in front of everyone ran through my head. And I started to doubt myself...." I sadly looked at the ground. Kagomi then tilted my head up to hers and said,

"That's quitter talk your sayin'! Skylar, listen, I know you and how you're determined to do things you like! But those thoughts can't push you down! If you believe in yourself, I know that at the showcase, they'll give you an envelope that says your name on the front!" Kagomi told me. and I smiled.

"Okay! I believe you! Plus, my friends said the same thing." I smiled as Kagomi laughed and lightly punched my arm lightly.

"You're such a numbskull! But I love you!" She said and ran to the trolley up ahead of her. She waved back to me and said,

"Have a good day at school!"

"Thanks! Bye!" I yelled before the trolley pulled downhill. I smiled to myself and started to walk. I got halfway down the street before I heard someone call to me,

"Hey Skylar!" I turned back to see Hiro, Gogo, Wasabi, Honey Lemon, and Fred walking down the street to me. I smiled really big and waved to them. But soon, my smile vanished as I saw the one thing I wish I never thought of seeing: Yama and his gang of thugs running towards me, their eyes shooting daggers. Fear filled my eyes as I said,

"Oh geez!" And whipped back around and ran with all the strength I had in me. Heavy steps pounded after me, and a roar said,

"We're coming for you, you little brat!!" Which made me run faster.

"They might know I have powers!" I thought to myself and remembering that night at the bot fight tournament, when I saved Hiro from getting pummeled by them.

"Get out of the way!" "Coming through!" "Watch it!" "Move it!" "I'm running here!" I yelled at people as I kept on running. I heard gasps and screams from the people being shoved aside far behind me and then,
