I slightly jump in the bed I slept in from the cracking of thunder that struck over the roof, heavy rain pounding on the window. I guess I could call it mine now, but it still felt wrong to take ownership of anything in the house. It's been over two weeks since Levi insisted I'd stay here, and nothing much has changed since. I open my eyes when I find it pretty useless to try to go to sleep; I'd been failing for hours, simply dozing into something light then snapping back awake whenever the thunder got too loud. I hated thunderstorms; I was terrified of them after having to endure them on the streets, especially overnight.

I sit up in the bed and glance around the dark room, unsure of how late it was or how to go to sleep. My first thought is of the TV in the living room. I should be able to wait out the storm there. I get out of the bed and let Levi's oversized shirt fall above my knees, heading out into the hallway and jumping from a sudden loud thud that comes from somewhere downstairs. There was a distant sound of a grunt, or maybe better described as a low moan, as if someone just stubbed their toe or something.

Maybe it was Levi, I think as I begin to walk down the hall towards the steps. The wood is cool beneath my bare feet as I hold onto the railing and get an overwhelming feeling of unease when I reach the landing. It could've been the thunder freaking me out, but the darkness didn't make it much better. I could see through the dark enough to know where I was going, and the occasional lightening provided more light until I reached the kitchen light switch. I could feel some relief wash over me when the light turned on, but that quickly goes away when I hear the loud shut of a door. It wasn't slammed but loud enough for me to hear.

I ball my hands in Levi's shirt as my heart couldn't help but pick up pace from the eerie tone the sounds and thunderstorm caused. I stare pass the staircase where it sounded like it came from, towards the back of the house. I had a thought to go get Levi, but I could also be overthinking and getting in my own head from my fear of the storm. I swallow my fear and begin to take shaky steps towards the stairs, peeking around the railing down the dark hallway when I get there.

What am I doing? I creep down the hallway, feeling the wall until I reach the switch at the end of it. None of Levi's rules included not turning on all his lights...

I peek down the next hallway that lead out to the backyard and into another corridor. From the given light, I could see something wet trailing from the door down the hall and around the corner, kinda like smeared water. The most dominant thing I could see were wet boot prints that faded away the further into the house it went, but there were occasional streaks of red on the wooden floors. I felt chills roll down my spine from the first thought that came to my head: blood.

I felt a knot form in my stomach as I can't help my curiosity; I carefully begin to follow the trail down the hall, jumping when thunder slightly rattles the house and covering my mouth with both of my hands when I release a squeak that was completely ready to be a scream. I felt so tense from the discovery I'd made on the floor; the sudden loud noise didn't help.

I follow the trail til I stop at the corner of the last hallway: the short hall that leads straight to that red door. Now my thumping heart was in my throat. It was just like a horror movie. I could feel my anxiousness make me break into a cold sweat just from staring at that damn door. And I think for the first time, my fear got the best of my curiosity and I turn off the lights and hightail it back upstairs.

When I reach my cellar door, I quit dragging my client's target's body to reach back for my keys to unlock the door. I stick it in the knob and begin to turn it until it snaps. I inhale deeply, trying to keep my composure as I look at the old broken key. The storm wasn't helping my patience; I hated doing jobs in the rain. I grab the knob, preparing to break down the door until I realize that wouldn't help at all right now anyway, especially in the rain. I sigh and let the knob go while looking back down at the unconscious body beside me, the rain draining the blood spilling from his head and getting soaked up in his clothes.
