Chapter 29: Only Several Steps

Present Time

By the time he's done, I am trembling with my whole body. There's so much information I feel like my head is going to explode. I'm surprised and angry and confused all at the same time.

My emotions are all over the place and I don't know how to react to anything.

"You are that kid..." I whisper to myself, closing my mouth with one hand, completely out of my mind.

I can't get everything that he's just told me, I can't believe a single word he's said.

He's been lying to me this whole time, so effortlessly I didn't even suspect it, because he never even stuttered. I feel so stupid, so deceived by the one person I trusted the most in this world.

The truth was in front of my eyes the whole time, but I was too in love with him to see anything past his eyes. Every slip he has made before shows up right in front of my eyes now like a slow motion.

How could I ignore the signs, when he knew stuff about me when I didn't even remember telling him when Matt freaked out when he heard my name.

How could I not see it in his eyes, when he asked me about my childhood crush, he asked me about himself, he asked me about England and lied about it all right TO MY FACE.

I can't believe we met that young, I can't believe that those horrible things happened to him, I can't believe we met later in LA and that he witnessed my weakest moment. I just can't believe anything he says.

"What did you do after Matt gave you the information about me?" I ask even though I know exactly what's coming. I need to hear it from Kai though. I need to, so I know that whatever decision I make tonight is justified.

"Sel, please." He pleads. "It doesn't matter. What matters is that we're where we should be." He moves closer, reaching for me but I move away.

"Answer every fucking question I ask." I raise my head and look him in the eye. "You owe me that much."

He closes his eyes, taking a moment, the tone of my voice surprising both him and myself. I've never talked to anyone like this, especially not him. I've never felt like slapping someone either.

"Did you ask Peterson to move me here? Did you ask him to give me a job in the main office? I remember that Rose, the woman at your Indiana office, told me that the chances weren't great because you only hired already experienced staff in the main office."

"The LBS was after you as well." He says after a moment as if it's supposed to explain everything.

"Yeah, I know that. But then suddenly they changed their mind."

"I had to stop them." I stare at him, my mouth open. It was him? The whole time I thought...

"Is this a joke? Please tell me there are cameras."

"I talked to Riley- their CEO. He's a friend. I asked them to back off."

"God, exactly how many people know about this? And the apartment. It's not a coincidence we live next to each other, is it?" I ask the puzzles slowly gathering and making the whole picture. "You knew that apartment from the inside before my father even bought it, that's why you knew your way around it so well. The company never offered it. You did! And the office. You were the one to give me my own office when Rob and Lola didn't even have one."
