KOLE

Everything is hazy... I don't know what I'm doing... What's going on? Where am I? What is this place? I don't know what's going on...

"Kole?"

Coal? Isn't that those black rocks from mines?

"Kole, can you hear me?"

Wait, are they talking to me?

"Kole?"

"Why do you keep saying that?"

"Saying what?"

"Coal..."

"Because that's your name... What's wrong with you?" a woman's voice says kind of angrily.

The fog slowly lifted and I turned my head, finding an older woman looking at me like I was annoying to her. She had tired green eyes and reddish blonde hair that was in a braid over her shoulder. I blinked, looking around to take in my surrounding a little better now. The fog wasn't as bad anymore and I guessed by the ugly pictures that I was either in a hotel or a hospital... I think... I'm not sure of much...

"Kole, what's going on?"

"I don't know what you mean."

"Why are you acting like you don't know what your name is?"

"Because I don't?"

The woman looked at me in surprise and then got up, leaving the room. I made a face and then looked at my arms where a whole bunch of tubes were connected. I don't know why I knew that I was in a hospital and not my own name... The lady came back with a man but they wouldn't come into the room. She kept pointing at me and then pointing at my head but the man kept hitting his hand on a piece of paper and then pointed out somewhere. Eventually, the lady gave up and came back into the room.

"Come on, we are being kicked out."

"Why? What did I do? Why am I here? Who are you?"

The woman blinked at me. "Who am I?"

"Yeah..."

"I'm Penelope, your mother."

"My mom? Then... who am I?"

"Stop bullshitting around, Kole, we have to get out of here."

"Is that my name? Coal? Like the black rocks they find in caves?"

"Kind of, but it's spelled different. Seriously, we have to go."

"Why?"

"Just... do what I tell you, okay?"

I frowned as a nurse came in and started taking all of the tubing out of me. She put bandages on my arms to cover the puncture marks and the woman, Penelope, held out a pair of pants and a shirt.

"I don't know if they will fit you or not. We have to hurry. Put them on and meet me outside of the room."

She shoved the clothing into my arms and I made a face but figured out how to get out of the bed and looked around. Was I supposed to undress myself here? Would that be okay? I started removing the gown that I was wearing and put on the underwear that Penelope brought me. When I put them on though, they seemed to not fit right. They were a little snug... I looked down and turned my head at my stomach. It was sticking out a little, not by much. Did I always look like this? I shook my head and put on the pants and shirt. The pants didn't fit right and so I had to forgo buttoning and zipping and just put the shirt on. It seemed to cover the important parts...

I met Penelope outside of the room and she grabbed my hand, pulling me along.

"Where are you taking me?"
