chapter eight ; rise of the cyberman & age of steel

LUNA SHOOK HER HEAD, CLOSING HER EYES AND WHISPERING THE SAME WORD OVER AND OVER.

"No," she begged, tears falling down her face. "No, no, no, you're not here. You're not alive. You're dead, I'm just dreaming, I'm—"

She let out a sob, falling forward into her sister's arms as her sister untied the ropes and let Luna go. Ricky let Mickey go, and the latter immediately rushed to Luna's side, waiting for her if she needed help.

"Luna," her sister voiced, staring into Luna's eyes with the familiar gaze; blue and calculating. "Oh my god, how are you alive? You're the dead one."

Luna sighed, looking to Mickey for help. How could she explain they're traveling with a bloke in his time machine and they ended up in a parallel universe where her sister is alive and she's dead?

"It's a long story," Mickey started. "You've just got to trust us."

"That's a lot to ask," Ricky spoke up. "Why should we trust you two? You, who looks like me but doesn't act like me and you, who pretends to be my dead girlfriend? No, no way."

Luna's eyes widened. "Dead girlfriend? I was -- we were -- what?"

He shook his head. "Whatever, doesn't matter. We got things to do."

Luna followed the group out, lagging behind with Mickey as they all checked their weapons and headed to the van, planning on storming wherever they were headed. "This is weird," Mickey spoke up gently. "Right? Feels...wrong."

Luna nodded. "Yeah," she said simply, unable to come up with anything else to say. Her sister walked a few paces ahead, talking lowly to Ricky, smiling every so often. Luna closed her eyes for a brief moment, taking in a deep breath. She'd held Leia's hand, crying in shock and fear as the life faded from her eyes -- the low blare of the sirens just far enough away that they were unable to save her. To see her alive, as if none of it happened?

"I'm sorry you have to see her," Mickey told her honestly as they sat down in the van. "It felt like a relief to see my Gran, but --"

"--Yeah, not so much for me, thank you," Luna turned her head, and he dropped the conversation. She felt bad but didn't know what to say. The whole situation hurt and put her on edge. "I'm sorry," she added. "That was harsh, I know, you're just trying to help and I--"

"--You don't need to apologize, Luna, it's fine."

Silence fell over the pair as the rest of the group stole glances at them. Luna stared at the floor, watching a chip crumb roll back and forth along the bottom as the car moved. She focused on the crumb, trying not to look at her sister.

They'd all split up. Jake and Leia took a different part of the house while Ricky and Mickey took a spot behind the bushes. They told Luna to stay with Missus Moore in the van -- to which Luna happily obliged. Despite wanting to help, Luna wasn't sure how much use she'd be. Far too shaken up to even form a real coherent sentence, the thought of fighting? Or helping the group solve whatever mystery they were figuring out?

Too much effort.

"I've identified the address," Missus Moore spoke into the walkie talkie. "It belongs to Peter Tyler, the Vitex millionaire."
