When the seas calmed and the skies were held back, you became interested in Jack's compass. As did Will so he asked Mr.Gibbs, "How is it that Jack came by that compass?"

"Not a lot is known about Jack Sparrow before he showed up in Tortuga with a mind to go after the treasure of the Island de Muerta. That was before I met him, back when he was captain of the Black Pearl."

Will turned around and Mr.Gibbs drank some rum. When he was what?  You spoke up, "He failed to mention that."

"He holds things close to the vest now, and a hard learned lesson it was," said Mr.Gibbs.

You observed the pirate. To a certain extent, you admired him. You wanted to know more. "Elaborate please, Mr. Gibbs."

"Three days out in the venture, the first mate comes to him and says that everythings in equal share, that should mean the location of the treasure too. So Jack gives up the bearings."

You realized what was going to happen and you felt a bit of pity.

"That night," he continued, "there was a mutiny. They marooned Jack on an Island and left him to die. But not before he'd gone mad with the heat."

"Ah," said Will, "so that's the reason for all the-" he did his own impression of Jack and you laughed.

But Mr. Gibbs said "Reasons got nothing to do with it. Now Will, Y/N, when a pirates marooned, he's given a pistol with a single shot. One shot. Well that won't do much good hunting or to be rescued. But after three weeks with a starving belly and thirst, that pistol's starting to get real friendly." Mr. Gibbs held a finger gun to his head. "But Jack, he escaped the island and he still has that single shot. Oh, he won't use it, save for one man."

"His mutinous first mate," You continued.

"Barbossa," added Will.

"Aye," said Mr. Gibbs.

"How did Jack get off the Island?" questioned Will. Good point.

"Well, I'll tell you. He waited out into the shallows, and he waited there three days till all manner of sea creatures got accustomed to his presence. But on the fourth morning he roped himself a couple of sea turtles and made a raft."

"He roped a couple of sea turtles?" asked Will.

"Bull," you said. "What did he use for rope?"

Mr. Gibbs couldn't find an answer when you looked up and saw Jack. He claimed "Human hair. From my back. Let go the anchor!"

You scoffed. Jack's stories will get him nowhere.

"Young Mr. Turner and I," said Jack, "and Miss Y/N, are to go ashore."

"Captain, what if the worst should happen?" asked Mr. Gibbs

"Keep to the code," answered Jack.

"Aye, the code."

"What's the code?" you asked Will but then laughed and said, "why am asking you, as if you'd ever know."

He smiled and punched your arm playfully.
