"Hey you know were going back to the island to meet Korra, you coming?" Asami asks as Tenzin waits patiently beside you for your answer.

You run a hand through your hair and sigh "you know I would love too but um I have a lot of paperwork to do and with Toph coming back soon it's better to get it away before she's asking me to read every word." You explained although you had no paperwork and had been done through the night to morning almost everyday. You hadn't stopped working because it kept you from thinking back to the red lotus and Korra.

Tenzin forced a smile and nodded before they took of and it was only you and the dying down crowd among you. Then again You were alone once more.

"Call on line one for you chief"

"Got it, send it through" you explained turning the speaker on as you drummed your fingers against the desk, it was starting to get boring trying to stay busy when there wasn't anything to do. It was 8 o'clock, most officers had left for the day but Korra would have arrived in the city 20 minutes ago so anything would be better than being there.

"Hey baby, I couldn't reach your flat, why are you working late?" The earth benders voice could be heard from the other line although something seemed off with the girl and she hadn't mentioned Korra yet; unlike the usual it didn't seem to be the topic of conversation this time. You sighed even thinking about korra which didn't go unnoticed from the girl.

"Paperwork" you explained quickly moving away from the current conversation Of plain formalities. "You know you don't have to check up on me, I promise I'll go home or something, I'm just really swamped" you lied looking down at the empty desk.

"Oh wow that is not what my officers were saying" she said. Shit you were caught. You sighed ready to explain yourself but the earth bender cut you off "don't worry about it, I'll be home soon"

"Yeah maybe" you agreed only so she could drop it, you really had no intention of believing that the girl would be home soon. "when are you coming back, I know you had to stretch another 3 weeks but I really miss you" you revealed sighing sadly, it was definitely true. Your relationship with korra died out after she left but with Toph, it only grew she spend most nights just talking, most things you would have done with korra; well except 1 or 2 other things but Toph really did become not only your girlfriend but your best friend too- and you could really do with a friend about now.

"I'm hoping tomorrow but I heard some news that I might be heading out to another city, I didn't get any information yet but there's be a sighting of some sort. I know it's hard in the city at the moment but you could always come with me, I need some better detectives out here until the earth kingdom calms down." She said and you thought maybe it wasn't such a bad idea to go especially if it put more distance between you and Korra. It wasn't like she was bothered to find you when she got back but it would've removed any urges to track her down yourself.

You were silent for a moment before replying "yeah, you know what I might just do that"

"Good, well I have to make sure I get the case first but if I do find someone suitable for acting chief I don't want to come back to some idiot running my city." She chuckled. soon after you both slipped into a long conversation about almost anything. The distance really left a hole in your relationship so maybe travelling out to the earth kingdom wouldn't do much damage onyour relationship.

——

And you did, the early morning trip wasn't ideal but you wanted to slip away from the city without much recognition especially from team avatar, Asami had called on you but you couldn't deal with any Korra issues at the moment and left a message at the station.

It wasn't what you expected from the small town of the earth kingdom but Toph had mentioned that she was still unsure who the target was but whoever it was, was definitely laying low if this is where they decided to go, it was very different from the city and even the South Pole, it was almost peaceful.

You were waiting in a small cafe for the earth bender but as you approached she had a look almost recognisable on her face. You shot up from your chair as she smile weakly handing you a picture without another word causing you to raise a brow.

"Korras here?" you whispered under your breath seeing the picture for yourself, her hair was shorter, almost cut in a rush and she appeared to have collected a series of bruises and cuts. "No shes in the city" you argued with no one in particular but you weren't up for bumping into the girl never mind tracking her down, this isn't what you needed not now not ever- she made her choice.

You shot from the door and breathed deeply holding in the the metal railing of a small fountain, the metal itself straining under your touch. "Hey hold up" Toph yelled taking a moment to find you with her sense.

"I ca-can't be here, she can't be here, Toph I-." You turn round finding her looking in your direction with a sad expression as she waited for you to find your words. She reached out and took your hands as you breathed slowly in and out "is it bad that I don't want to see her?- she pushed me away Toph, she broke my fucking heart, we were always together- in sync, that's just what twins are but Korra, it upsets me that we share the good spirit and yet she does this to her own brother! You know I never did find out what I supposedly did wrong- she was talking to me one moment and the next nothing!.. and you know what, no matter how much the red lotus broke her I would have never broke our friendship- I WENT THROUGH IT TOO!" You screamed crashing to your knees, crying hysterically at this point. A small crowd of onlookers gathered and Toph fell to her knees too taking you into her embrace as you wailed in anger at your sisters actions or lack of.

It wasn't ideal to break down in the streets but of course you weren't one for healthy coping mechanisms but rather one of personal self destruction. Finding means to deal with the lost wasn't easy, so after a couple of weeks since her leaving you fell into a deep unhealthy obsession with piling your feelings up, almost like a skyscraper until just one simple little slip comes along and- crash.

You unravel completely.

"Y/n?"

There it was, the voice you hadn't heard in three whole years. It always played on your mind, eating you up from the inside, breaking you over and over again. The first thing they say is forgotten is the sound of their voice but it seemed like you held on to the voice because it made you feel just a little less lonely.

But it seemed so real like the certain Avatar was really here, you hadn't even realised that Toph had let go and was now stood up leaving you hugging your knees on the cold concrete, she seemed to hear it too and was watching closely as the water bender dropped on her own knees but this time in green earth kingdom clothing. "It is you" she whispered again but you clutched your eyes forcing the voice and hallucination of your former sister to go away. "Look at me" she ordered softly taking your hand, her own tanned cut fingers intertwining with yours, your eyes trailed your hands together for a moment, taking a small glance at the matching friendship bracelet on her wrists. "I'm sorry"

You shot your eyes up towards hers and swallowed harshly as the same blue eyes looked right back at you. "No"

"What" she chuckled trying to lighten up the conversation like the three years hadn't happened.

But it did.

There was no going back.

"No, no, no- you do not get to do that!" Korra jumped up at your words clearly hurt as you rose to your feet, Toph held her breath beside you as your tone got louder and louder as you got closer and closer to Korra. "You. Left. Me!" You snapped wiping your eyes harshly leaving a red mark against your black tired eyes. "I came here to escape YOU."
