Chapter 17

A couple days later, Maddie was getting ready for school. As she walked out of her bathroom, from taking a shower, she could hear her Dad and Elena in her Dad's room. She could also hear all the lovey dovey stuff.

"Hello. Daughter in the house." Maddie called as she headed down the stairs.

"Sorry sweetheart." Stefan called back. Maddie could still hear them while she ate breakfast. She stopped for a moment when she heard what they were talking about.

"What happened to Maddie's mother?" Elena asked.

"Let's not talk about that right now." Stefan said.

"What? Bad break up?" Elena asked.

"No, it's not that." Stefan said. "Madeline doesn't like to talk about her and I don't want to upset her."

The two of them came downstairs. "Good morning, Maddie." Elena greeted.

"Morning Elena. Dad." Maddie said.

"How are you this morning?" Stefan said.

"I'm good." Maddie said.

"You guys ready to go?" Stefan asked.

"I am." Elena said.

"Me too." said Maddie, picking up her bag. The three of them walked outside, got in Elena's car, and headed to the school.

When they arrived at the high school, Maddie walked away from Elena and her dad because she knew they would start talking about her mother. But, she wasn't far enough as they started talking because she could still hear them.

"It was a one night stand with this girl." Stefan explained. "She got pregnant, but she didn't want anything to do with Madeline."

"Katherine?" Elena asked.

"It wouldn't be possible for Katherine to have kids since she was a vampire." Stefan replied. "This happened before I met Katherine."

"Right. Stupid question." Elena said.

"I didn't even know the girl was pregnant. She just showed up on my doorstep with Madeline, told me it was my baby, and said she didn't want anything to do with her." Stefan said. "I raised Madeline on my own with a little bit of my father and Damon's help in the beginning. They both adored her and Damon still does."

"After you became a vampire, was it hard to be around her?" Elena asked.

"Of course. It was extremely difficult at first." Stefan said. "But, she was my daughter. I couldn't just abandon her. There was no one to take care of her."

"When did you turn her?" Elena asked.

"When she was 16." Stefan replied. "She asked me to do it because she wanted to live forever with me."

"How did you turn her?" Elena asked.

"By snapping her neck." Stefan answered. "It was the least painful way I could think to do it."

"You ok?" Elena asked.

"Yeah." Stefan said. "Even though she asked me to do it, I still feel like it's my fault because ultimately I turned her." Elena gave Stefan a hug and a peck on the lips.

Maddie stopped listening after that.

"Hey." Jeremy greeted her.

"Hey." Maddie said.

"You ok?" Jeremy asked.

"Yeah." Maddie said. "How are you?"

"I'm doing good." Jeremy said. "What about you?"
