A/N: hey everyone who's reading! As you may or may not be aware I have also written a series before called Greenie girl. This is basically a remake of that but slightly different in regards to who Y/N is (i.e she is in group b and not group a) but it will more or less be the same book. The reason I'm doing it again is because looking back at Greenie Girl I cringe at how awful the writing is, and after reading glademother book "the other side" (which is so amazingly written) I think I have more of an understanding of how to write properly (I will be as no where near as good as them however because chess's writing is ridiculously phenomenal oh my days) full creds go to them for this book idea, glademother I promise I won't completely copy your book but this was your idea originally so it felt wrong not to credit you! Anyway, if you're reading this I hope you enjoy it, and thanks for reading 💞💞 (and yes I've named one of the characters Gzi- I just think it's such a cool name)
"I'm not sure I trust this place." I hear Maria say from her bunk bed. I sit up on the bottom bunk of my own bed and glance over to her. She's sitting cross-legged on the top bunk, chewing her nails like she's always does.
"Maria, you need to stop worrying." Harriet says from the bunk above me, swinging her legs over the side so they dangle in front of me. "This place can't be any worse than the Coremeum, can it?"
"Don't say that, H." Maria whimpers. I feel a pang of sympathy for Maria. She was always the baby of our group- not the type of person to stand on her own two feet. Being whisked away from the only place she knows as home and thrown into this weird and strange new place can't be easy for her.
"Maria, I promise you it will be fine. At least we're all together, right?" I say to the girl, meeting her eyes.
"Not all of us." She mumbles, picking at a loose string on her duvet. It was true. There had been 70 of us in the Coremeum, and only ten of us had made it out alive, excluding Aris. Me, Harriet, Sonya, Maria, Gzi, Natasha, Ava, Renee and Niamh. The only survivors from the horrific journey it took to get through the maze and to escape the Coremeum.
"At least it's some of us." Renee says cheerfully.
As soon as she finishes her sentence there is a knock at the door of our room, and in enters the man that brought us here. I didn't know his name, but his demeanour reminded me a lot of a rat, so in my head he was simply known as Rat Man.
"Ladies, it's supper time." He grins, gesturing out of the door towards the corridor.
I get out of my bed and follow him as he leads our group down a couple of winding corridors until we make it to a massive cafeteria. Several tables line the room, and almost all are filled with groups of teens just like ourselves, chatting and eating without a care in the world-like this is all completely normal.
The man leads us to an empty table at the far end of the room, before striding off to stand by the door we entered in from, tapping a pen against the clipboard he was holding.
"I wonder where Aris is." Ava says as we take a seat on the hard metal benches.
"I wonder where our food is." Niamh replies, scanning the room for any sign of something to eat.
"I think we have to go up there and get it." Sonya says, gesturing to a bar in the far right of the room. A queue of boys is lined up along it, holding a tray as the workers behind the bar dollop something I can't quite make out onto plates.
"I'm not hungry." Maria says quietly, looking around the room nervously.
"Yes you are." Gzi says, nudging her shoulder. "Mari, you have to eat something. These people have provided us with actual food, and a proper bed. Why don't we take advantage of these things, hm? We haven't had them for two years."
"She's right, Mari." Renee adds in, "come on, let's get some food." She stands up from the table and looks down at the girl, waiting for her to join. Maria looks up at her with big, brown eyes that remind me of a puppy, but she gives in and joins Renee. The two girls walk over to the bar, collecting a tray each from the stack.
"Let's go as well." Sonya says to the rest of us. We all stand up from our seats and make our way over to the bar, joining the end of the queue.
I grab a blue tray from the stack, but as I stand back up I feel someone behind me bump into my back, knocking me forward slightly.
"Oh, sorry about that." An accented voice comes from behind me. I spin around and come face to face with a boy- not exactly face to face, as he is a few inches taller than me. He looks around my age, with blonde feathery hair and deep brown pools for eyes.
"Oh, don't worry." I smile, looking him up and down discreetly. He's dressed in more or less the same clothes that I am- a white long sleeve top and beige cargo trousers. I assume that the people that brought us here provided them just like they did with me.
"Y/N, come on!" Sonya says from in front of me in the queue, tugging at my sleeve as the line starts to move forward. I give the mysterious boy a quick smile before turning back to the food, holding out my tray as the man behind the bar spoons a large amount of what looks like beef stew onto a plate before handing it to me.
I collect a glass of water from another table and rejoin the girls at our table, who have all got their own plates of grub.
"Mhm, this is good." Nat says, shovelling a mouthful of mashed potatoes into her mouth. "Better than anything you've ever cooked, Y/N."
"Oh shut up." I grumble, taking a bite of my own food- it is exceptionally good, I have to admit.
"If I could all have your attention please." Janson calls out across the cafeteria just as I take a second bite of my food. I turn my head and look over in the man's direction as the hall falls silent, everyone directing their attention to him.
"Thank you. Now, for those of you who've been here for a while, you know the drill. But if you have recently arrived, then if I call your name please come and stand up next to me, and I will take you away to your new life."
I furrow my brows. New life? What the hell does that mean?
The man starts rattling off a bunch of names from his clipboard- none of which I recognise and none from our group.
I watch as various teens around the room jump up from their seats, high-fiving their friends before striding off to join the man at the front of the cafeteria.
In amidst to looking around the room, my eyes fall upon a certain table only a couple away from ours- the table where the mysterious boy who bumped into me earlier is sitting.
He's sat between two other boys- a brunette boy who's staring intently at the man reading off names, and a Korean boy who's staring down at his plate of food, occasionally glancing up to the man. The blonde one looks like he's whispering something to the brunette, but he's speaking to quiet for me to make out what he's saying.
"That's all for now. Don't get dishearten if your name wasn't called, you're time will come." With that, the man nods his head slightly to us, spins on his heel, and leads the group of teens out of the cafeteria, off to their new life.
A/N: also I forgot to add that I probably will find it quite hard to upload a new chapter of this every single day as I go to boarding school, I have exams coming up and my mental health is not very good but I will try my hardest as I don't want to lose readers :)
