Isla Matthews was an introvert, always on her own, hiding from the miserable scenes that were replayed over and over again at her house. No mom, no dad, just a drug addicted older brother who she'd avoid at all costs. It was hard, having to hide from her home, from her "family", but Isla was used to it. She figured if she'd just finish high school, no distractions she could leave the Outerbanks and finally be free from the patriarchy on the island. Isla despised the Kooks and their way of ignoring the people from the cut, they were too focused on their own little bubble to notice the damaged.
Isla had no one, she was always by herself, surfing, or hanging out by the beach. She never went to parties, she didn't have friends, and she even thought she didn't want to, she was decent with her life.
Until she met the Pogues.
One night, Isla was going to spent her night as usual; sit by the beach, read a book and stay up past midnight. But when she arrived at the beach, book in hand, she noticed a group of 4 friends sitting around a bonfire on the sand, laughing loudly while playing around. Isla was planning to ignore them, and sit a bit further away from her usual spot, however, she didn't finish a single chapter of her book when a dark skinned girl walked towards her and sat down in front of her.
"You seem lonely." The girl spoke, studying the area around Isla. "I'm Kiara, want to join us?"
And that night, for the first time in her life, the fourteen year old Isla Matthews made friends.
And in the next two years, the five of them grew inseparable.
