The Connection They Share

Chapter 1

I move out of Loki's arms and face Heimdall as he had just entered the room, "Thanos? That's his ship?" I question and Heimdall nods in confirmation. Loki grabs my hand and drags me to the main area where Heimdall had awaken the Asgardians. "Thor we need to get off this ship" Loki says as Thor follows us. "How?" he asks and I remember that Loki had to join the ship somehow, "The Commodore that Loki arrived in, it can fit maybe 3/4 of the population on that ship" I explain and Thor nods. Thor then orders the fit and those willing to fight to stay whilst the children and infirm follow Val to the Commodore. Loki takes my hand and pulls me into a small, private area, "Go with Val, get on that ship" Loki says cupping my face in his hands. I push his hands down with an incredulous look "Loki, that's ridiculous, I can help you take him down in fact I'm probably the only one who can." I plead with him but he shakes his head "No, I want you to go with the remainder of my people and keep them safe if we fail here" I roll my eyes and try to push past him "Well some people don't always get what they want" I retort. Suddenly, the ship rocks causing Loki to fall into me and pin me to the ship wall, "Stop being an idiot, please" he whispers "You hear that? Thanos is going to tear this ship apart whether or not it is full of innocents, I need to know that you and my people will be safe."
"But why is he attacking us? This is a civilian ship not a war ship" I ask and Loki looks away "What did you do?"
"I took the Tesseract from Asgard, okay? I thought it would help us get to Earth." Loki admits and I push him away.
"Well done Loki, you probably just killed everyone on this damn ship" I say sarcastically and throw my hands up in the air "Just when I believe that you turned over a new leaf, you pull some shit like this. Why couldn't you leave it to be destroyed, huh? I wanted us to retire but now we're caught up in an unwinnable battle. I guess I was right, not everyone gets what they want, especially not me." I turn away from him, tears streaming down my face. "I know and I'm sorry" Loki says quietly.
"Loki..." I say facing him again.
"No, listen. I'm sorry that I ruined our plans but I promise that we will have that house on a cliff" Loki pulls me into a kiss and it felt like a final goodbye, "Get on that ship, warn the people of Earth and once this is over I will find you and we will retire for good. I might even join you in battle but I promise that I will see you again. I love you, Avery, never forget that"
"I..." I go to say but Loki covers my mouth, "Shh, tell me that when we meet again, I know I have a lot to learn but we'll do it together" Loki orders and smiles. The ship rocks again, the lights cut out and the emergency lights come on as well as the alarms. I pull Loki down in a sweet kiss before running to the Commodore, I see several creatures break onto the ship and go for the Commodore but I slash at them but they kept coming. I chop one of their heads off but the leader type person of that group slashed me in the arm with a specialised spear. I throw him away from me and stagger with the last of the Asgardians onto the Commodore. I turn once inside the ship and see Loki, I smile as the doors shut. I'll see him again, he wont die, he never does. I make my way to the front (where Val was piloting the ship) before collapsing on the ground, I bring my hand up to the cut and realise it was very deep and is bleeding profusely. I quickly tear the material of my cape and make a make shift bandage, why wasn't it healing?

I must have passed out from exhaustion, when I wake Val was lightly shaking my shoulder "Hey, we've arrived in Norway" she says. I quickly stand up but feel something snap inside of me, I stumble and Val steadies me "Are you alright?"
"I think so, I just..." I trail off at the empty feeling filling my chest, I rub my head and smile weakly, "It was probably nothing" I walk slowly with Val, dragging my feet as we make our way to where the rest of the Asgardians stood waiting.
What do we do now?
We have no king, he could be dead, where does that leave us?
How are we supposed to survive, make a living?
I clutch my head at the voices of worry, I see the small houses situated around a harbour "This was all I could secure on such short notice" Val says.
"It's fine, some will just have to bunk together until we can afford more houses" I try to remain positive but that emptiness spreading through my chest was making it difficult.
"How?" Val questions and everyone looked at me.
"Fishing" I say with a small smile "We'll learn to fish then sell what we catch at the local town" I look at the tired and battered civilians "But that can wait until tomorrow, for now choose a house. Families stay together and no more than four people living in a house" I order and the people trudge down the street to find a house. Me and Val take up residence in the smallest house on the very edge of the harbour that only had two rooms. I collapse face first onto the bed and finally let myself cry, it started as small sobs then full on heaving as I struggled to breath. I didn't know if Thor, Loki or even Bruce had survived the attack. Val rushed over to me and told me to take deep breaths. I slowed my breathing until I was only hiccupping, I leaned into Val and she pulls me to her chest. I slowly calm down until I finally passed into darkness and a part of me wished I didn't wake up.

I heave a crate onto the back of a truck before closing the back and hitting the vehicle telling the driver to take the most recent catch into the local town. I wince at the pain in my shoulder, it still hadn't healed and was beginning to hurt badly but I didn't want to worry Val. "Hey!" speak of the devil and she shall appear "What do you think you're doing?" she asks storming up to me. "Helping" I state and she rolls her eyes. "You're pale as hell from that arm wound, you shouldn't be lifting large crates like that."
"I need to do something" I say as I walk along the harbourside. "I know something you can do, find some treatment for that arm. You've been saying it's gonna heal for the past two days we've been here and whilst you're out there fight some of Thanos's army." Val orders with a no nonsense look on her face. "Okay fine but if anything goes wrong here, you call me" I say and she crosses her arms "Yeah whatever, now go" I open my pocket dimension and take out my sling ring, I notice the staff but decide to leave it there at the moment. The only place I can think of that could help me is Wakanda, they helped my dad. I picture the fields of sub-Saharan Africa and that lab that showed up in a vision. I swirl my arms and a portal opens up "I'll see you once the fight is over" I say to Val and she nods before I walk through the portal.

I come out in a field but I wasn't quite sure where I am but I see some people go through an invisible barrier. I make my way over but before I could enter, I was faced with a sword in my face. I step backwards and raise my hands, I was faced with several men all wearing large blue shawls and had raised bumps on their faces. "Who are you? And what are you doing here?" the leader asks.
"My name is Avery Barnes and I have come to seek an audience with your king" I say with a deep breath. He narrowed his eyes then glanced at my arm which I could feel begin to bleed through the bandage, I should have changed it before I came here. He nods at the other men and they bind my hands together; he pulls out a communication device and contacting a woman who was in battle armour and held a spear. They talk for a minute before they walked me inside the barrier and all the way up to the palace. I didn't recognise many of my surroundings as I only saw a little of the country from the vision. I was marched through the palace and straight into a throne room. The first person I notice is the king sat on a throne with silver border, it is very nice and several other people sat on either side of the throne wearing a variety of outfits in different colours. There was also two females stood on the right hand side of the throne but I didn't see dad anywhere. "State your business here" the king orders, placing his hands on the arms of the throne. I glance around nervously at the people in the room before straightening up "I have come to warn you of an intergalactic threat"
He leans forward with furrowed brows "Go on"
"Your highness, a titan called Thanos is searching for the Infinity stones that were created at the beginning of the universe. If joined then he could cause catastrophe on a galaxy wide scale" I say, gauging their reactions. "What does this have to do with us?" one of people on the chairs asks.
"Two of those stones are on Earth and whilst I believe the time stone is being guarded securely. I don't currently know where the mind stone is" I say quickly and that sparked a reaction but the king just kept looking at me with an unreadable expression. "Do I know you from somewhere?" he asks. I fiddle with my fingers "We-um-we fought at the German airport. You wanted to kill my father." I explain, focusing on my hands. "James Barnes is your father?" he says with a slight smile. I nod when one of the armoured woman came into the room "Your highness, Captain Rodgers is on his way with 'Vision'."
I let out a sigh in relief, Thanos hadn't got the mind stone yet. The king nods and gets his guards to release me. I shake my hands but get dizzy, I glance at my shoulder to see it stained red, I must have lost more blood than I thought. I hear some words being exchanged but I didn't know if they were directed at me or not; I try to center myself but couldn't focus on anything. "Avery? Avery?" I heard my name being called but it felt as though I was underwater. "I'm sorry" I slur before collapsing in front of the king and promptly passing out. I think this is a new low.

"I'm sorry, little one." I hear Thanos say, I turn to see him grab a green woman by the arm, who is she? He pulls her towards the edge before throwing her off the edge, a light shoots up from the cliff as the sacrifice is complete. All of the sudden me and Thanos are transported miles away from the cliff. Thanos sits in a shallow pool, he opens his hand and there sits an orange stone. He adds it to his gauntlet where he has already collected the power, space and reality stones. As Thanos stands up to go back to his ship, I could see a very faint tear escaping his left eye.
