Y/n POV:
First period seemed to by really slowly. Avery was still flirting with Mark, and I would keep hearing her annoying laugh. Actually, it wasn't her laugh that was annoying. It was the fact that she would laugh at least 30 times a minute and each time the laugh wouldn't change. It sounded like a broken record. The other students were either talking to their friends or asleep. Very few were actually playing attention, like me. Mr. Adams was a chill teacher. He would say, and I quote, "I don't care if you don't pay attention in class, but if you get a bad grade, that's your fault." Right now he was talking about a project due next week. "For the project, you can pick a partner. You will have to present about an important event in history. Even dress up based off of that event. Also you must-"
"Attention students!" Said a voice over the intercom. Everyone stopped talking to listen to the principal. "The theme for this year's prom is 'A Night In Paris'. Any students that would like to help plan and create decorations may come to the gymnasium." I looked over at Mr. Adams. He looked a bit annoyed from the expression on his face. "She interrupted my class for that? Prom isn't even for another 7 months." He rolled his eyes and continued on with the class.
A Night In Paris sounds beautiful. I could help decorate even if prom isn't any time soon. I raised my hand. "Mr. Adams?" He turned around. "Yes?" I noticed Avery stop laughing (thank goodness) and turn to look at me. "Um.. I was wondering if you would mind if I went to the gym to help with the prom things?" He didn't say anything, but took out a piece of paper and write something down on it. He handed me the piece of paper and said "Of course. Here's a hall pass, so you don't get in trouble." I smiled and stood up. I looked over at Mark and he had a look on his face that said 'don't leave me here with Avery'. I waved bye to him and left the classroom.
I put my hall pass in my pocket and opened up the other paper Mr. Adams gave me. It read "Historical Event Project: due Friday next week. Pick a partner. Dress up based on event. Present a slideshow (at least 5 slides) to explain event." Then, it had a list of events to choose from such as the Civil Rights Movement or World War 2. Oh, he wrote down a summary of the class notes so I'd know what to do. How nice.
I opened the door to the gym, and saw Mrs. Monroe sitting on a chair with her phone. She looked up and saw me. "Ah, Y/n! I didn't think anyone would want to help with the prom. Come, let's brainstorm!" I closed the door to the gym and walked over to her. "So, I was thinking, since the theme is 'A Night In Paris' that we could put out little stars and hang them from the ceiling, but how could we make them visible?" She rolled a big white board from the other side of the room over and wrote "hanging stars" on it. "We could get some fluorescent liquid and put some on the stars, so they would glow in the dark," I thought out loud. She clapped her hands together. "Wonderful! I'll get some construction paper to cut out some star shapes!" She walked over to a bin and pulled out a few sheets of white construction paper when I heard the gym door open again.
I turned my head and saw a boy that looked a bit tall, but not as tall as Mark... probably around 5'10, walk towards Mrs. Monroe. "Oh, hello Sam!" She said to him and he waved at her. "We were just going to start cutting out stars for the prom, would you like to help?" He nodded and sat down in a chair. Mrs. Monroe handed us both some sheets of paper, then put her long, blonde hair up into a high ponytail. "Now," she begin to say. "I'll go see if it is okay with the principal to do the glow in the dark stars. I'll just be gone for a moment." I watched her walk out of the gym before turned to the boy and saying, "So.. you're Sam?" He kept cutting the paper and nodded. Is he not going to talk to me? Fine. I just won't talk to him.
A few minutes passed and Mrs. Monroe still hadn't returned. I looked up at Sam to get a better look at him. He had dark brown, curly hair that fell over his eyes a little. It seemed like he had the same color eyes as his hair. He looked up at me and smiled. I looked down at his paper and saw he was cutting the most perfect paper stars I've ever seen. "Woah! How are you doing that? Oh wait.. I think I've seen you go to the art club room. You're in art club, right?" He nodded then went back to cutting.
Ok, this was getting on my nerves. "Why won't you talk to me?!" I said a bit too loudly. He looked up at me with a frightened look on his face. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to yell." He put down his scissors and took out a pen and a notebook from his backpack. I watched him turn each page to find a blank one. There were words written on each page but none of them looked like notes for classes. He found a blank page and started writing something with his pen. When he finished he handed me the notebook.
Yes I'm Sam. Yes I'm in art club. I wish I could talk to you cause you seem cool but I'm mute.
"Oh my gosh, I am so sorry I yelled at you!" I said to Sam while handing him the notebook back. He gave me a weak smile. "I'm Y/n, by the way." He picked his scissors back up and smiled. After that we, well I, talked about random things, such as school or friends while we kept cutting out stars for a bit. Then I got a text from Mark.
