Sam opened his eyes the next morning and panicked when he didn't see Bucky by his side. He calmed down, though, when he could hear faint voices from downstairs. He swung his legs round and sat up on the edge of the bed. He rubbed his eyes and willed himself to stand. He stumbled out of his bedroom and down the hall, making his way downstairs and stopping at the bottom. There was Bucky, cooking in the kitchen, and Sarah, AJ, and Cass were sat at the dining table. Sam opened his mouth, then closed it again. Sarah was in conversation with Bucky as he cooked.
"Uncle Sam!" Called Cass, waving at him. Sarah turned to her gaze to him and raised an eyebrow. Sam opened his mouth again, looking over at Bucky who now had his eyes set on him. Sam's cheeks flushed under Bucky's gaze. Bucky gave a small smile before turning back to what he was doing. Sam walked into the dining room.
"What's going on?" He asked, pulling out a chair beside AJ. Sarah leant on her hand.
"What? Shocked to see us?" She asked, a smirk on her lips. Sam furrowed his eyebrows.
"I mean.. why didn't you let me know you were coming over?" He asked, his eyes travelling back over to Bucky. His heart was beating loud in his chest. Sarah sighed.
"You weren't answering your phone, how could I?" She asked sceptically. Sam pressed his mouth into a thin line.
"Oh.. right." He said slowly, his eyes not leaving Bucky as he glided around the kitchen, serving up food onto plates.
"I can't help but notice you staring at Bucky." Said Sarah, her tone teasing.
"I thought you said it wasn't polite to stare, mama." Said Cass, who was sat across from Sam. Sarah chuckled.
"It ain't." She said, folding her hands in front of her. Sam shot her a look. She looked away, feigning innocence. Bucky brought five plates over to the table.
"Breakfast is served." He said, lightness in his voice. Sam was surprised to see him looking so happy. Sam looked down at the food, pancakes and bacon. It looked yummy, he could give him that. Bucky sat down next to Sarah and began eating his food.
"Thanks for cooking, Bucky." Said Sarah, beginning to cut her food up.
"You're welcome." Said Bucky, his eyes flickering over to Sam again. Sam nodded, as if to agree with her. For some reason, his mouth seemed to be glued shut and he couldn't get a word out. Maybe the whole scene he awoke to this morning had just shocked him.
They ate in silence, the occasional word or two being said. The food wasn't burnt, which was nice. It tasted good as well, so that was a plus. Bucky seemed to be watching Sam anxiously, as if awaiting his opinion on the food. Sam noticed this and cleared his throat.
"So um.. didn't know you could cook so well." Said Sam, gesturing to the food. Bucky smiled.
"It's good." Sam added, nodding. Sarah was watching them with close attention.
