"That is ridiculous, Wilson. I've never heard that word in my life." Bucky seethed, glaring at the scrabble board.
Sam raised his eyebrows.
"You haven't heard a lotta words, Barnes. Because you're old." he said, crossing his arms.

"I suggested this game cause I thought it would be a fun bonding experience-" Steve started, but Sam and Bucky both glared at him, and he decided to remain quiet.
It was ten o'clock on a Saturday night in the avengers compound, and almost everyone had gone to bed, leaving just them up and very awake.
"How about we play a different game?" squeaked Peter Parker, who had wanted to stay up and play with them.
"Fine." said Bucky, still glaring at Sam.
Steve began packing away the scrabble, while Peter looked at the pile of board games.

"Hey," Sam grabbed a box, making the tower fall. "How about this?"
He held up Monopoly, smirking.
Peter began sweating.
"Um- um- maybe- maybe if Mr. B-Barnes is already angry, maybe we shouldn't play- um.. Monopoly." he stammered nervously, looking from Sam to Bucky.
Bucky crossed his arms.
"If Sam wants to play it, then that's fine by me." he said through gritted teeth.
Steve laughed nervously.
"Alright.." he said, not enjoying the tension in the room. He just wanted them to get along, but that seemed to be impossible.
They began setting up the Monopoly board, and after deciding that Peter would be the banker, they all chose counter-pieces.

Sam chose the shoe, and immediately after began a fight between him and Bucky on who should get to have it.
"You only want it because I want it!" Scoffed Sam, holding the piece out of Bucky's reach.
"That's- that's not true! I had been eying up that piece since we unpacked the game." Bucky stammered, furious.
Steve groaned.
"Can you please just stop arguing? Pick a piece, there's plenty to choose from." He said exasperatedly.
Bucky glared at Sam.
"Fine," Sam chucked the shoe at Bucky. "I'll pick a different piece, since I'm so nice." He gave Bucky a smile, which only made him more mad.
"Ugh. Whatever, Wilson." Grumbled Bucky.

They went on to play Monopoly til half one, and when Peter was beating them all, they couldn't take it anymore.
"Alright, you win, I'm going to bed." Said Bucky, standing up from his seat and stretching. Sam watched him leave the room.

There was a beat of silence.

Then Steve turned to Sam.
"Why can't you guys just get along for once? You know he's still adjusting to this world." He pleaded.
Sam raised his eyebrows.
"You can't use that excuse for him being petty and annoying towards me." He said, crossing his arms.
Peter stood up, hurriedly packing away the board, mumbling something about never playing boardgames with super soldiers again.
Sam sighed, getting up.
"I'm going to bed. Goodnight, Steve." He said, and gave Peter a wave.
Then he retreated downstairs to his bedroom, sighing as he fell face first onto his bed.

The next morning, Bucky seemed to be actively avoided Sam.
Sam thought he would be happy about this, but every time he would even try to say one thing to him - whether it was teasing or not, he would leave the room. It was starting to get annoying.
"Hey Steve," Sam approached him at the breakfast bar. "Bucky's avoiding me."
Steve raised his eyebrows.
"Oh really? I wonder why." He said before turning back to his breakfast.
Sam gaped at him.
"Don't give me that attitude, Rogers. Come on, man, help me out." He said, sitting down next to him.

Steve sighed.
"Well, maybe you really hurt his feelings without meaning to." He said.
Sam raised his eyebrows.
"You really think so?" He said.
Steve gave him a pointed look.
"He's been through a lot, alright? Words can hurt sometimes, so maybe you took your teasing too far."
Sam's stomach dropped, feeling immediate guilt at Steve's words.
Had he really hurt Bucky's feelings? He thought, if Bucky didn't like it, then he wouldn't retaliate with his snarky, teasing attitude.

Maybe he had gone too far.

He got up from the stool and started walking out of the room.
"Hey!" Steve called out.
Sam stopped, looking back at him.
"He'll be on the roof, be careful." Steve said, giving Sam a nod.
Sam climbed the stairs to the roof. It was a long way up, and he could've taken the elevator, but he was already half way up so he might as well keep going.

When he got to the roof, he immediately saw Bucky standing by the railing, leaning against it, looking out over the cityscape.
Sam pursed his lips, pondering the best approach without startling him.
He walked casually towards him, trying not to be too loud.
"Don't try and be sneaky, I can hear you." Said Bucky.
Sam rolled his eyes.
Bucky turned around, leaning his back against the railing.
"What do you want?" He asked, an eyebrow raised. He looked pretty angry.
"To apologise," said Sam, walking a little closer.
The light hit Bucky's back, casting a glow effect all around him.
He smirked slightly, crossing his arms.
"Go on then," he said, tilting his head. "Apologise."

Sam clenched his jaw, annoyed by his petty attitude. He walked to the railing, leaning against it beside him.
Bucky turned his head, keeping his gaze fixed on Sam.
"I'm.. sorry." Said Sam, exhaling. That wasn't so hard, right?
Bucky's grin only grew, and he gave a light chuckle.
"That's good enough, I guess." He said, and Sam scowled.
"Well, now I wanna take it back." He said, putting his hands on his hips.
Bucky raised his eyebrows, his grin fading.
"You can't take it back, Wilson. No apology retracts." He said.
Sam rolled his eyes, moving back to the railing and looking out, keeping his eyes focused on the skyline.
Bucky joined him by the railing, closer than before.

There was silence between them for a few moments, the sound of the busy traffic below filling the space.
Bucky's eyes flitted back between Sam and the buildings beyond the roof.
"Thanks," he said, giving Sam a light tap on the shoulder.
Sam turned to him, eyebrows slightly raised.
"For what?" He asked.
"For apologising, idiot," Bucky replied, "God, you're so dumb."
Sam scoffed, making Bucky laugh.
"Yeah, well, you're not too bright either. As far as I'm concerned, there's no real brain in that pretty head of yours." He retorted.

A beat passed. Bucky stared at Sam.

"..What?"
