The Doctor Dances

“go to your room” The Doctor said and all the patients stopped, before he continued “Go to your room. I mean it. I'm very, very angry with you. I am very, very cross. Go to your room!” he said pointing away from them and the patients hung their heads down and walked back to their beds and laid back down. “ I'm really glad that worked. Those would have been terrible last words.” making Alyssa chuckle, before going forwards and sat down, as her and the Doctor thought about what to do next. 
“Why are they all wearing gas masks?” Rose asked as she looked at one of the patients, 
“They're not. Those masks are flesh and bone.” Jack said, 
“How was your con supposed to work?” The Doctor asked, 
“Simple enough, really. Find some harmless piece of space junk, let the nearest Time Agent track it back to Earth, convince him it's valuable, name a price. When he's put fifty percent up front, oops! A German bomb falls on it, destroys it forever. He never gets to see what he's paid for, never knows he's been had. I buy him a drink with his own money, and we discuss dumb luck. The perfect self-cleaning con.” Jack saidm 
“Yeah. Perfect.” the Doctor said, 
“The London Blitz is great for self-cleaners. Pompeii's nice if you want to make a vacation of it though, but you've got to set your alarm for volcano day.” He said, chuckling a little bit which caused Alyssa to glare a little bit at him, as she stood up. “Getting a hint of disapproval.” 
“Take a look around the room. This is what your harmless piece of space-junk did.” The Doctor said, 
“It was a burnt-out medical transporter. It was empty.” Jack just said, as he got up 
“Rose. Alyssa” the Doctor said,  turning around to start leaving, but Alyssa stayed there. 
“Are we getting out of here?” Rose asked following, 
“We're going upstairs.” The Doctor said, 
“I even programmed the flight computer so it wouldn't land on anything living. I harmed no-one. I don't know what's happening here, but believe me, I had nothing to do with it.” Jack said, 
“I'll tell you what's happening. You forgot to set your alarm clock. It's volcano day.” the Doctor said, before a siren sounded as Alyssa walked over to Jack, 
“What's that?” Rose asked, 
“The all clear.” Jack said, 
“I wish.” The Doctor said, before him and Alyssa, left the room, trying to find the Doctor who disappeared,
“Mister Spock?” Jack yelled out as him, Rose and Alyssa looked for the Doctor, 
“Doctor?” Rose yelled. 
“Have you got a blaster?” The Doctor asked, from up a flight of stairs, causing the three to run back, to the stairs, 
“Sure!” Jack said, before the three ran up the stairs in front of a metal door, 
“The night your space-junk landed, someone was hurt. This was where they were taken.” the Doctor said, 
“What happened?” Rose said,
“Let’s find out. Jack if  you would.” Alyssa said, as he and Jack traded spaces, 
“What's wrong with your sonic screwdriver?” Rose asked, 
“Nothing.” The Doctor said, as Jack used a gun to cause the lock to disappear, 
“Sonic blaster, fifty first century. Weapon Factories of Villengard?” The Doctor said, as Jack handed him the blaster, and the Doctor quickly looked at it, 
“You've been to the factories?” Jack said, 
“Once.” The Doctor said, handing it back 
“Well, they gone now, destroyed. The main reactor went critical. Vaporized the lot.” 
“Like I said. Once. There's a banana grove there, now. I like bananas. Bananas are good.” The Doctor said, before walking into the room, 
“let me guess you had something to do with it?” Alyssa said smirking before following after the Doctor, “Only you would destroy a factory and replace it with a banana grove.”  she said, as the four entered a nearly destroyed room, which had a broken window, 
“What do you think?” the Doctor said, 
“Something got out of here.” Jack said,
“Yeah. And?” the Doctor said, 
“Something powerful. Angry.” Jack said, as he walked further into the room into a room that had child’s drawings all over it, 
“Powerful and angry.” The Doctor said, 
“A child? I suppose this explains Mummy.” Jack said, 
“How could a child do this?” Rose said,
“Rose, a child can be capable of many things given the right tools, imagination, and more.” Alyssa said, as she walked into the room and picked up one of the drawings as The Doctor turned on a tape machine 
“Do you know where you are?” Constantine’s voice said, 
“Are you my mummy?” The Child said, 
“Are you aware of what's around you? Can you see?” Constantine said, 
“Are you my mummy?” the child said, 
“What do you want? Do you know” Doctor said, 
“I want my mummy. Are you my mummy? I want my mummy! Are you my mummy? Are you my mummy? Mummy? Mummy?” the child said, 
“Doctor, I've heard this voice before.” Rose said, 
“Me too.” the Doctor said, 
“Mummy?” the child said, 
“Always are you my mummy?. Like he doesn't know.”
“He doesn’t know,” Alyssa said, 
“Mummy?” The child said, 
“Why doesn't he know?” Rose asked, looking at Alyssa, 
“Are you there, mummy? Mummy?” The child said, “Mummy? Please, mummy? Mummy?” and the Doctor started pacing, 
“Doctor?” She said, 
“Can you sense it?” he said, looking at Alyssa and she looked around before she felt something, something that was coming from the walls, she nodded  
“Sense what?” Jack
“Coming out of the walls. Can you feel it?” The Doctor said, looking at Rose and Jack, 
“Mummy?” the child said, 
“Funny little human brains. How do you get around in those things?” 
“When he's stressed, he likes to insult species.” Rose said, 
“don’t take it personally, he insults lots of people.” Alyssa said, 
“Alyssa Rose, I'm thinking.” The Doctor said, 
“He cuts himself shaving, he does half an hour on life forms he's cleverer than.” Rose continued 
“There are these children living rough round the bomb sites. They come out during air-raids looking for food.” The Doctor said, 
“Mummy, please?” the Child said, 
“Suppose they were there when this thing, whatever it was, landed?” 
“It was a med-ship. It was harmless.” Jack said,
“you keep saying that Jack, but what if it wasn’t? what if one of the kids was affected? Altered?” Alyssa said, looking between him and the Doctor, 
“Altered how?” Rose said, as Alyssa listened to the scratching noice of the record she swallowed as she walked over to the Doctor, 
“I'm here!” The child said, 
“It's afraid. Terribly afraid and powerful. It doesn't know it yet, but it will do. It's got the power of a god, and I just sent it to it's room.” the Doctor said, looking at her, as he noticed to it, 
“Doctor.” Rose said, 
“I'm here. Can't you see me?” the Child said, 
“What's that noise?” Rose asked, 
“End of the tape. It ran out about thirty seconds ago.” Alyssa said,
“I'm here, now. Can't you see me?” The child said,
“I sent it to it's room. This is it's room.” the Doctor said, before he and Alyssa turned around to see the child behind them 
“Are you my mummy? Mummy?” the Child said, 
“Doctor?” Rose said, 
“Okay, on my signal make for the door.” Jack said, 
“Mummy?” The child said, before Jack 
“Now!” Jack yelled pulling out what he thought was his gun on to find a banana, 
“Mummy?” The Child said as the Doctor pulled out the actual gun and pointed it at the wall and used to make a square hole in the wall,  
“Go now! Don't drop the banana!” The Doctor said, and all the four started climbin through the hole, Alyssa and Rose, being the first one’s through 
“Why not?!” Jack said,
“Good source of potassium!” The Doctor said, before the two climbed the whole and Jack instantly ripped the gun from the Doctor
“Give me that!” Jack said, before he pointed the gun at the hole, 
“Mummy. I want my mummy.” The Child said, before Jack used his blaster to repair the hole, 
“Digital rewind.” Jack said, before he threw the banana back at the Doctor “Nice switch.” 
“It's from the groves of Villengard. I thought it was appropriate.” the Doctor said, 
“There's really a banana grove in the heart of Villengard and you did that?” Jack said,
“Yes he did.” Alyssa said 
“Bananas are good.” The Doctor said, as the child punched the wall and it started to crack, 
“Doctor!” Rose said, be
“Come on!” The Doctor said, and the four ran off only to run into some of the gasmasked patients. they turned around and rushed back only to find more patients, 
“Mummy. Mummy. Mummy.” the patients said, as Jack started pointing his gun at the patients. “It's keeping us here till it can get at us.” The Doctor said, 
“It's controlling them?” Jack asked, 
“It is them. It's every living thing in this hospital.” The Doctor said, 
“Okay. This can function as a sonic blaster, a sonic cannon, and as a triple-enfolded sonic disrupter. Doc, Alyssa what you got?”
“nothing i'm willing to use on them.” Alyssa said, 
“I've got a sonic, er. Oh, never mind.” the Doctor said, 
“What?” Jack said, 
“It's sonic, okay? Let's leave it at that.” The Doctor said, 
“Disrupter? Cannon? What?” Jack yelled looking between the two groups 
“It's sonic! Totally sonic! I am soniced up!” The Doctor yelled and Alyssa rolled her eyes, 
“A sonic what?!” Jack yelled,. 
“Screwdriver!” The Doctor and Alyssa yelled together and Jack looked back in disbelief, right when the child broke through the wall, and Alyssa grabbed his gun “Going down!” she yelled before she used it and the four fell through it and to the floor below, “Doctor, are you okay?” She asked as the four got up, as Jack repaired the hole she made
“Could've used a warning.” The Doctor said,
“I did warn you, I yelled going down.” Alyssa said, 
“Who has a sonic screwdriver?” Jack asked looking at the Doctor, 
“We do.” Alyssa said, bringing out her pen, as Rose started looking for a light switch, 
“Lights.” 
“Who looks at a screwdriver and thinks, ooo, this could be a little more sonic?” Jack said,
“Jack you’ll be surprised how useful these things are.” Alyssa said, 
“What, you've never been bored?” The Doctor said, 
“There's got to be a light switch.”  Rose said, 
“Never had a long night? Never had a lot of cabinets to put up?” The Doctor said, as Rose found a lightswitch and flicked it and a bunch of patients all sat up, “Mummy. Mummy.” They all said, 
“Door.”Jack said, before they rushed over and Jack tried to use his gun only to find it didn’t work, “Damn it!” he said as the patients started advancing on them as the Doctor pushed through him and started sonicking the door, 
“Mummy.” The patients said, 
“it's the special features. They really drain the battery.” Jack said
“The battery?” Rose said, before the doctor got the door open and they rushed into what looked like a storeroom “That's so lame!” 
“I was going to send for another one, but somebody's got to blow up the factory.”
“Thats how the Doctor communicates. It's how he met Rose.” Alyssa said, as the Doctor worked on locking the door behind them, 
“First day I met him, he blew my job up.” Rose said, nodding with what Alyssa said, before the Doctor joined them 
“Okay, that door should hold it for a bit.” the Doctor said, 
“The door? The wall didn't stop it!” Jack said
“Well, it's got to find us first! Come on, we're not done yet! Assets, assets!” the Doctor said, 
“Well, I've got a banana, and in a pinch you could put up some shelves.”
“I’ve got an actual blaster.” Alyssa said, bringing it out,
“Are you kidding me that would’ve been real useful earlier!” Jack said, taking the gun from her and looking it over before handing it back
“I don’t shoot anything that might be saved,” Alyssa said, and the Doctor looked at her for only a second before rushing over to a window 
“Window.” The Doctor said, walking over to a window, 
“Barred. Sheer drop outside. Seven stories.” Jack said, before he sat down 
“And no other exits.” Rose said, 
“Well, the assets conversation went in a flash, didn't it?” Jack said, 
“So, where'd you pick this one up, then?” The Doctor asked Rose,
“Now Doctor don’t be rude.” Alyssa said, 
“She was hanging from a barrage balloon, I had an invisible spaceship. I never stood a chance.” Jack said, 
“Okay. One, we've got to get out of here. Two, we can't get out of here. Have I missed anything?” the Doctor said, as Jack disappeared, 
“Yeah. Jack just disappeared.” Alyssa said, Rose and the Doctor whipped around to see Jack gone. The Doctor walked down and sat down as Rose paced,
“Okay, so he's vanished into thin air. Why is it always the great looking ones who do that?” Rose said 
“I'm making an effort not to be insulted.” The Doctor said, 
“I mean, men.” 
“Okay, thanks, that really helped.” the Doctor said, 
“Rose?, Alyssa, Doctor? Can you hear me? I'm back on my ship.” Jack said, through the nearby radio that crackled to life. that caused the four of them to walk over, “Used the emergency teleport. Sorry I couldn't take you. It's security-keyed to my molecular structure. I'm working on it. Hang in there.” 
“How're you speaking to us?” The Doctor asked, 
“Om-Com. I can call anything with a speaker grill.” Jack said, 
“Now there's a coincidence.” the Doctor said, 
“What is?” Jack asked 
“The child can Om-Com, too.” The Doctor said, 
“He can?” Rose said, 
“Anything with a speaker grill. Even the Tardis phone.” The Doctor said, 
“What, you mean the child can phone us?” Rose said, 
“And I can hear you. Coming to find you. Coming to find you.” the child called through the radio, 
“Doctor, can you hear that?” Jack said, 
“Loud and clear.” the Doctor said, 
“I'll try to block out the signal. Least I can do.” Jack said, as he started trying to block the signal “Coming to find you, mummy.” The child said, 
“Remember this one, Rose?” Jack said, before ‘Moonlight Serenade’ started coming through the radio, 
“Our song.” Rose said, to the Doctor’s questioning gaze. 
    They started waiting for whatever Jack was going to do to transport them out of there, The Doctor returned to trying to get through the barred window. 
“What you doing?” Alyssa asked, 
“Trying to set up a resonation pattern in the concrete, loosen the bars.” The Doctor said, 
“You don't think he's coming back, do you?” Rose said, 
“Wouldn't bet my life.” The Doctor said, 
“Why don't you trust him?” Rose asked,
“Why do you two?” The Doctor asked,
“I know who he is, Doc, and he wouldn’t do something like this if he knew it would harm people.” Alyssa said, 
“He saved my life. Bloke-wise, that's up there with flossing. I trust him because he's like you. Except with dating and dancing.” Rose said, before she realized the look the Doctor was giving her, “What?” 
“You just assume I'm” The Doctor started, 
“What?” Rose asked, 
“You just assume that I don't dance.” the Doctor said, 
“What, are you telling me you do dance?” Rose said, 
“Nine hundred years old, me. I've been around a bit. I think you can assume at some point I've danced.” the Doctor said, 
“You?” Rose said, as Alyssa got up from where she was and walked over to the radio, as the conversation continued, 
“Problem?” the Doctor said, 
“Doesn't the universe implode or something if you dance?” Rose said, 
“Well, I've got the moves but I wouldn't want to boast.” The Doctor said, as Alyssa turned the Radio up
“Well let’s prove Rose wrong Doctor, you’ve got the moves. Show me your moves.” Alyssa said holding a hand out ot the Doctor. 
 “Alyssa, I'm trying to resonate concrete.” 
“Jack'll be back. He'll get us out. So come on. The world doesn't end because the Doctor dances.” Alyssa said, and the Doctor got down from where he was standing and took her hand and put his arm around her waist. Alyssa smiled up at the Doctor before she shook her head remembering something. “Rose can I see your hands?” 
“Why would I?” Rose said,
“Please?” Alyssa said and Rose got up and walked over, and produced her hands, the Doctor looked over and looked at them interestingly, 
“Barrage balloon?” The Doctor said, 
“What?” Rose asked, 
“You were hanging from a barrage balloon.” Alyssa said, 
“Oh, yeah. About two minutes after you left me. Thousands of feet above London, middle of a German air-raid, Union Jack all over my chest.” Rose said, 
“I've travelled with a lot of people, but you're setting new records for jeopardy friendly.” The Doctor said,
“I told her to be careful.” Alyssa said, as the Doctor looked back over at her, 
“Is this you dancing ,Doctor, Alyssa? Because I've got notes.” Rose said, 
“Hanging from a rope thousands feet above London. Not a cut, not a bruise.” the Doctor said looking back over at Rose, 
“Yeah, I know. Captain Jack fixed me up.” Rose said, 
“Oh, we're calling him Captain Jack now, are we?” The Doctor said, 
“Well, his name's Jack and he's a Captain.” Alyssa said, 
“He's not really a Captain, Alyssa.” The Doctor said, making Alyssa smirk at him, 
“Do you know what I think? I think you're experiencing Captain envy. You'll find your feet at the end of your legs. You may care to move them.” Alyssa said, 
“If ever he was a Captain, he's been defrocked.” The Doctor said, before he actually tried to start dancing with Alyssa, 
“Yeah? Shame I missed that.” Alyssa said, as she smiled at him as the 3 were transported to Jack’s ship. 
“Actually, I quit. Nobody takes my frock. Most people notice when they've been teleported. You guys are so sweet.” Jack said gesturing at Alyssa and the Doctor, “Sorry about the delay. I had to take the nav-com offline to override the teleport security.” 
“You can spend ten minutes overriding your own protocols? Maybe you should remember whose ship it is.” the Doctor said, 
“Oh, I do. She was gorgeous. Like I told her, be back in five minutes.” Jack said, 
“This is a Chula ship.” The Doctor said, 
“Yeah, just like that medical transporter. Only this one is dangerous.” Jack said, and the Doctor snapped his fingers and a golden glow enveloped his hands, 
“They're what fixed my hands up Jack called them er” Rose said, 
“Nanobots? Nanogenes.” the Doctor said, 
“Nanogenes, yeah.” Rose said, 
“Sub-atomic robots. There's millions of them in here, see? Burned my hand on the console when we landed. All better now. They activate when the bulk head's sealed. Check you out for damage, fix any physical flaws. Take us to the crash site. I need to see your space junk.” the Doctor said, 
“As soon as I get the nav-com back online. Make yourself comfortable. Carry on with whatever it was you were doing.” Jack said, 
“We were talking about dancing.” The Doctor said, 
“It didn't look like talking.” Jack said, 
“Well you interrupted us Jack,” Alyssa said walking over to him, 
    They waited while Jack worked on the ship, “So, you used to be a Time Agent now you're trying to con them?” Rose said, 
“If it makes me sound any better, it's not for the money.” Jack said,
“For what?” Rose said, 
“Woke up one day when I was still working for them, found they'd stolen two years of my memories. I'd like them back.” Jack said, 
“They stole your memories?” Rose said, 
“Two years of my life. No idea what I did. Your friend over there doesn't trust me, and for all I know he's right not to.” Jack said,
“Jack don’t take it personally, he doesn’t usually trust anyone he just met, didn’t trust me when he first met me,” Alyssa said before the ship beeped 
“Okay, we're good to go. The Crash site” Jack said, before they started heading towards the crash site. 
    They walked through a field towards the crash site, where guards were patrolling the area. “There it is. Hey, they've got Algy on duty. It must be important.” Jack said, 
“We've got to get past him.” The Doctor said, 
“Are the words distract the guard heading in my general direction?” Rose said, 
“I don't think that'd be such a good idea.” Jack said, 
“Don't worry I can handle it.” Rose said, 
“I've got to know Algy quite well since I've been in town. Trust me, you're not his type. I'll distract him. Don't wait up.” Jack said, before he headed down to Algy, 
“Relax, he's a fifty first century guy. He's just a bit more flexible when it comes to dancing.” The Doctor said, 
“How flexible?” Rose said, 
“Well, by his time, you lot have spread out across half the galaxy.” the Doctor said, 
“Meaning?” Rose said, 
“So many species, so little time.” Alyssa said, 
“What, that's what we do when we get out there? That's our mission? We seek new life, and, and?” Rose started, 
“Dance.” The Doctor finished before they watched Jack talk to the man, before the man suddenly fell and a gas mask came through his face, “Stay back!” The Doctor yelled as the three rushed down, 
“You men, stay away!” Jack said holding a hand out to the others, 
“The effect's become air-borne, accelerating.” the Doctor said, as the Air raid sirens started up again, 
“What's keeping us safe?” Rose asked, 
“Nothing.” Alyssa said, 
“Ah, here they come again.” Jack said, 
“All we need. Didn't you say a bomb was going to land here?” Rose said,  
“Never mind about that. If the contaminants airborne now, there's hours left.” The Doctor said, as a soft voice singing caught her attention 
“For what?” Jack said, 
“Till nothing, forever. For the entire human race.” The Doctor said, and Alyssa interrupted him “can anyone else hear singing?” 
“Rock-a-bye baby, on the tree tops.” Nancy’s voice carried through the camp and Alyssa walked over as the singing continued “When the wind blows, the cradle will rock. When the bough breaks, the cradle will fall. Down will come baby, cradle and all.” Alyssa opened the door and Nancy looked back at them in shock, she was singing to keep a person with a gasmask asleep, and Alyssa gestured for her to keep singing, 
“Rock-a-bye baby, on the tree tops. When the wind blows the cradle will rock.” Nancy sang as she walked forward and unlocked the cuffs with her pen before pulling her away and out. the five immediatly went over to the ship Jack had parked and they uncovered it 
“You see? Just an ambulance.” Jack said,
“That's an ambulance?” Nancy said, 
“It's hard to explain. It's from another world.” Rose said, 
“They've been trying to get in.” Jack said, 
“Of course they have. They think they've got their hands on Hitler's latest secret weapon. What're you doing?” The Doctor said, as Jack tried to get into the ship 
“The sooner you see this thing is empty, the sooner you'll know I had nothing to do with it.” Jack said, before there was an explosion and sparks flew out and an alarm sounded, 
“Didn't happen last time.” Jack said, 
“It hadn't crashed last time.” Alyssa said,
“There'll be emergency protocols.” the Doctor added, 
“Doctor, what is that?” Rose asked, before a person with a gasmask started banging to get out of the container he was in to get to them “Doctor!” Rose yelled 
“Captain, secure those gates!” The Doctor said, 
“Why?” Jack said, 
“Just do it! Nancy, how'd you get in here?” The Doctor said, looking over at Nancy, 
“I cut the wire.” Nancy said, 
“Show Rose. Setting two thousand four hundred and twenty eight D.” The Doctor said, throwing his Sonic over to Rose, 
“What?” Rose asked, 
“Reattaches barbed wire. Go!” The Doctor yelled and the two rushed off, before Jack came back and worked on getting the ship open which he finally did when Rose and Nancy got back,
“It's empty. Look at it.” Jack said, showing the empty ship, 
“What do you expect in a Chula medical transporter? Bandages? Cough drops? Rose?” The Doctor said, 
“I don't know.” Rose said, 
“Yes you do.” Alyssa said, holding up a hand, 
“Nanogenes!” Rose said, 
“It wasn't empty, Captain. There was enough nanogenes in there to rebuild a species.” the Doctor said, 
“Oh, God.” Jack said, 
“Getting it now, are we? When the ship crashes, the nanogenes escape. Billions upon billions of them, ready to fix all the cuts and bruises in the whole world. But what they find first is a dead child, probably killed earlier that night, and wearing a gasmask.” the Doctor said, 
“And they brought him back to life? They can do that?” Rose said, 
“What's life? Life's easy. A quirk of matter. Nature's way of keeping meat fresh. Nothing to a nanogene. One problem, though. These nanogenes, they're not like the ones on your ship. This lot have never seen a human being before. Don't know what a human being's supposed to look like. All they've got to go on is one little body, and there's not a lot left. But they carry right on. They do what they're programmed to do. They patch it up. Can't tell what's gasmask and what's skull, but they do their best. Then off they fly, off they go, work to be done. Because, you see, now they think they know what people should look like, and it's time to fix all the rest. And they won't ever stop. They won't ever, ever stop. The entire human race is going to be torn down and rebuilt in the form of one terrified child looking for its mother, and nothing in the world can stop it!” The Doctor said, 
“I didn't know.” Jack said,
“We know that, Jack, you didn’t mean for this to happen.” Alyssa said, walking over to him as the Doctor started working on the ship, as patients approached, “Mummy. Mummy.” They called out, 
“Rose!” Nancy said, as Rose ran over to the ship and looked at the blinking read light
“It's bringing the gas mask people here, isn't it?” She asked, 
“The ship thinks it's under attack. It's calling up the troops. Standard protocol.” Alyssa said, 
“But the gas mask people aren't troops.” Rose said, 
“They are now. This is a battle-field ambulance. The nanogenes don't just fix you up, they get you ready for the front line. Equip you, programme you.” The Doctor said, 
“That's why the child's so strong. Why it could do that phoning thing.” Rose said, 
“It's a fully equipped Chula warrior, yes. All that weapons tech in the hands of a hysterical four year old looking for his mummy. And now there's an army of them.” The Doctor said, as the Patients surrounded them before they stopped, 
“Why don't they attack?” Jack said, 
“They’re waiting for their commander.” Alyssa said, 
“The child?” Jack said, 
“Jamie.” Nancy sad, 
“What?” Jack said,
“Not the child. Jamie.” Nancy said, 
“So how long until the bomb falls?” Rose said, 
“Any second.” Jack said, 
“What's the matter, Captain? A bit close to the volcano for you?” The Doctor said, as he got off the ambulance and walked towards Nancy,
“he’s just a little boy.” Nancy said, 
“I know.” the Doctor said,
