Aven, Jerr and I hadn't doubted for a second that this was Beckett's doing. The wolf was absolutely ravaged, and by the placement of the wounds, Aven and Jerr concluded that the death had probably been a slow and painful one. My heart broke as I looked down at the wolf and all the blood pooling out of it in many different places. All because of me.

"This isn't your doing, Sari," Jerr comforted me. "This is purely Beckett's cruelty."

Aven had immediately transformed and tried to chase down Beckett, with the order for the two of us to wait for his return by the horses.

I disagreed with Jerr. "This wouldn't have happened if I would have stayed in Fire Moon."

"Beckett has been killing innocents before you were even born, and he will continue to do so. You are only one of many of his fucked up reasons, Sari."

"But I am one of his reasons. How did he even do this? How -" I couldn't get the rest of the sentence out, but Jerr understood what I was asking.

"I don't know how they knew we were taking this road," he said silently. "I do not know how we didn't smell them out. But Beckett and his escorts were able to turn, and they left the Castle before us. It's probable they got here long before us, and only waited until we were close enough to send their message."

"But then why didn't they just come after us? If it's me he wants?"

Jerr looked at me with sadness growing in his brownish green eyes, his brown hair hanging over his grieving face. "Because Aven is dangerous, Sari. Beckett knows he doesn't stand a chance against him here, especially not if I'm around, too. This wolf however, was powerless. The poor bloke never stood a chance."

I gulped, hoping some of the grief would ebb away. "Is Aven really that powerful?"

"He absolutely is, Sari. Probably one of the most powerful wolves to have ever lived," Jerr answered. I didn't know what to say after that, not with the young wolf in front of us and the grim feeling following us that accompanied death.

Time seemed to pass as slow as it could as we waited for Aven to return. But Beckett had been long gone by the time we'd arrived, so the odds of Aven finding him were very small. So Jerr and I weren't surprised when Aven had returned empty handed. He simply shook his head, and that told us all we needed to know. Beckett had gotten away.

"Add this to my list of reasons to make his death a slow and painful one, too," Aven seethed as he looked down at the wolf. "That bastard is going to pay for this, for everything he's done." He looked up to me as he said that. I felt intimidated by his stare, and I did not understand what he meant by it. Was I one of those reasons, too, or did he feel I was a part of the cause of this wolf's horrible end? I thought the latter of myself.
