However, today, his mother was not around. She was on a business trip, and thus could not make sure he followed every step as necessary.

He looked at the kitchen counter after getting ready for school to see a plate with a pillbox and a note saying "DO NOT FORGET DUMBASS -love mom".

He reached for a pill only to hear the doorbell.
(Ding-dong)
Completely forgetting about his medication, the incident that would occur later that day, was set in stone.
Walking over to the front entrance of the house, the young man completely forgot about the pills as he was greeted by his neighbor.
