Nikolas's POV

"Are you looking forward to the ball?" he asked.

I smiled slightly. "Yes," I said, simply.

"Really?" Papa rose his eyebrows ever so slightly. "I am surprised."

"Well, it's, it's usually quite a lovely occasion. The decorators have been working tirelessly on the ballroom, the chefs on the food..."

"Yes, that is all true," he said, breathing deeply. He closed his eyes, and for a second I wondered if he'd fallen asleep. "But normally you do not like such events."

"That is true," I conceded. And yet, I was looking forward to the ball, to my surprise. It wasn't an intense, overwhelming excitement by any means, but I felt much more optimistic about the upcoming event than I normally did.

"Is it the girl?" he asked me. "Cassandra Carmichael, is it?"
