"I wanted to talk to you without your mother pressuring you one way or another," Nikolas said. "Yes, she's right. Politically, we're an excellent match. But ultimately, we are the ones who would be married. You and I would be the two spending the rest of our lives together. It is all well and good for them to make matches for us, but they are not the ones directly affected. This about you and me."

"And what is your point?" she asked, swallowing hard.

"The point is, Calista, I am asking you if you will marry me."

"Of course I care that you don't love me," he said. "You, and so many others forget: I am human too."

Calista was taken aback, and suddenly felt ashamed of her thoughts and behavior towards him. "But..." she started. "You're a king. You can do whatever you want now."

"You're right," he said. "I can do whatever I want. But whatever I want isn't always what is right. I am a king, yes, but that also means I have a responsibility to my people and to those I love. I must do what is right."

Calista said nothing.

"You do not have to marry me," he said. "And if that boy you love is someone eligible for you to marry, then marry him. It is a gift to love someone with whom you can spend the rest of your life." He looked at her very seriously. "We do not all have that luxury."
