Tommy's pov

It was a Tuesday. I was in the middle of Spanish until my class teacher, Miss Casandra, came in.

"Tommy!" She called. "Pack your things, your brother is in the office to pick you."

"My brother?" I wondered. "Which one? Why is he here?"

I listened to Miss Casandra anyway. After putting books into my school bag, I walked to the door.

"Diviértete, Tomás," said my Spanish teacher.
(translation: have fun, Thomas.)

I replied, "Gracias, señor."
(translation: thank you, sir.)

I made my way to the school's office, seeing Wilbur. Wasn't he supposed to be at college today? I wondered. Wilbur smiled, but it was different. It had like a hint of sadness, pity, worry or maybe he was just tired. He put his hand on my shoulder, thanking the teacher there before bringing me out. We walked outside my school to Techno's car slowly. Wilbur ruffled my hair, but it wasn't rough or annoying like how it always was. I knew something was up.

"I hope there was no important subject I interrupted," Wilbur said, his voice soft and gentle.

"No," I answered. "Just boring old Español."

Wilbur nodded. I didn't ask why he picked me. We reached the car and hopped in.

"Did you tell him?" Techno questioned from the driver's seat, tying his long pink hair into a messy bun.

As Wilbur sat up front and closed the car door, he replied "no".

"Tell me what?" I asked, but none of them replied.

Wilbur buckled in his seatbelt and Techno started to drive.

"You guys pick me early from school and refuse to tell me why? I deserve to know."

Wilbur cleared his throat. "Phil, uh... He's in the hospital."

My heart felt as if it pitted deep into my stomach. I hated the feeling.

"He's in critical condition," Wilbur continued.

"What happened?"

"We don't know yet," Techno chimed in, flicking the car's right indicator. "We'll find out once we reach the hospital."

I leaned back to my seat and sighed softly. That explains the weird atmosphere.

Third pov

As they rushed hurriedly into the hospital, Techno put his hand back.

"Wait here," Techno told his younger brothers before walking to the reception.

The brunette and the blonde watched their eldest brother from the plastic chairs in a distance. They've never seen Techno devastated, scared, or show any emotion in general until this moment. He walked back to Wilbur and Tommy as if colours were grey and happiness didn't exist. Tommy didn't notice how upset Techno was at first, but Wilbur couldn't miss it.

Wilbur got up from the plastic blue chair he was sat in. "Where is he?"

Tears started to prick the corner of Techno's eyes. He shook his head 'no', and Wilbur wished that what he feared wasn't true.

"No, Techno," Wilbur's voice shook unsteadily. "He's...gone?"

Techno bit his bottom lip while nodding to Wilbur's question. He fixed his stare onto the marble hospital flooring. He didn't bother to wipe the tears that flowed steadily down his cheeks. This was too much for a young schoolboy like Tommy to comprehend.

"He was poisoned. It got to his heart too quick, they couldn't-" Techno cut himself off to take a breath. "They couldn't save him."

Wilbur lost all hope. He sat back down on the cheap plastic chair, next to Tommy.

Techno wanted to seem tough for his brothers, he really did, but this was just too hard on all three of them. Techno joined Will and now sat beside him. There were many thoughts going through their heads. Techno didn't know what to do - he's never felt like this. Wilbur wanted to cry more than he already was. Tommy just wanted to yell.

Over twenty minutes passed and Wilbur knew he had to be in charge, they'd stay there the whole day if no one did anything. He got up and pulled Tommy from his seat, the younger hugging the older. Wilbur held Tommy protectively.

"Techno, let me drive." Wilbur called softly, the eldest facing his younger siblings. "We have to go home eventually. You're not alright to drive."

Techno pulled the car keys from his pocket, giving it to Wilbur.

"Let's go."

It turned dawn quickly, they were home together but it felt like they were alone. They lost their father, their happiness, their light in the darkness.

Wilbur's pov,
the next morning.

I was up the same time I usually wake up, 8am. Tommy would usually leave for school at this time, but I texted him yesterday night that he didn't have to go if he didn't feel like it. I had cooked them dinner yesterday but Tommy had slept early. I took my brothers to McDonald's for brunch.

Techno and I ate our food while Tommy didn't even touch his, let alone look at it. He was just staring out the car window. I got out the driver's seat and into the back. I carried the box of chicken nuggets in front of him, but he just shook his face, indicating he didn't want it.

"Come on, Toms," I said softly, "you haven't eaten anything since yesterday."

Tommy turned to me, the tears in his eyes showed a mixed between sadness and rage.

"Why was he poisoned, Wilbur?" he asked. "Why'd he have to die? It wasn't his time to die."

I put the box of nuggets back in the McDonald's packaging.

"It's never anyone's time to die," said Techno, "but it already happened. I know it's hard to accept but over time things will get better. Now eat, don't starve yourself for no reason."

I smiled, giving Tommy a french fry that he ate.

As I learned in Physics, the longer the time, the lesser the impulse. We couldn't do anything to make things go back to the way they were but over time, we were happy again.
