SIDE NOTE BEFORE WE START:

Most of this book is written on the assumption that the reader has some basic understanding of the world of Keeper of the Lost Cities. Some things will be left unexplained, and there will be a few spoilers.

It had been three days since the elvin organization named 'Neverseen' recruited her. They'd explained everything, about the Council, the different intelligent species, and about their rival, the Black Swan.

Her creators.

She'd learned she was a genetic experiment.

She could hear thoughts. Read minds. Project her own thoughts to other people, like Gethen had shown her yesterday.

She hadn't been that surprised when they'd told her she wasn't human. It was something she had suspected for a long time.

The Neverseen had promised to teach her to fight. In exchange, all she needed to do was offer her aid to help the world.

Their methods were not going to be peaceful, she could tell. But after a life of never fitting in anywhere, the family they were offering her seemed too hard to resist.

So she had agreed.

"Sophie Foster, do you pledge loyalty and alliance to the Neverseen?"

Sophie looked at the glass ball Gisela was offering her. She reached out and placed her hand on top of it, barely blinking when something sliced her finger.

"I swear to protect my brothers and sisters with my life," she vowed.

Fintan had told her that the oath was different for every person. Whether you could join the Neverseen or not depended on how much you believed your words.

Sophie held her breath as she took her hand off the glass ball. It had turned dark red.

For a moment, nothing happened. Then Gethen stepped forward and draped a black cloak around her shoulders—black, with a white eye on each sleeve.

"Welcome to the Neverseen, Sophie."
