Author's note: I forgot to say this before, but this book will loosely follow the plot of Keeper of the Lost Cities, and include a couple quotes. Just to put that out there.

They walked right past the receptionist—definitely someone Quinlin should get rid of as soon as possible—and climbed the stairs into a small office. It wasn't very grand for the chief mentalist of the Lost Cities. Maybe he just preferred things simpler.

A chill ran down her spine as she noticed the four screens lined up on the wall across from her, just above the long table. She barely glanced at the man in the corner, her eyes focused on the single word displayed across the screen on the far right in blood red letters: NEVERSEEN.

The left screen was occupied with the words BLACK SWAN, and in the middle were two live videos—from different angles—of the San Diego wildfires that the Neverseen had used to get the Black Swan's attention.

It had been a message of sorts: Tell Alden Vacker where Ales is. And don't you dare screw this up for us.

What worried her was that if Quinlin—Alden too, probably—knew that the Black Swan wasn't the only rebel group, it was only a matter of time before they partnered with the them.

Council's support or not, Quinlin and Alden were both powerful figures with abundant resources. The Black Swan would definitely profit from accepting them as parters.

"You must be Sophie Foster." Quinlin's voice drew her attention.

She turned towards him. He was tall, probably taller than Alden. His hair was black, cut at chin length. His skin was olive brown, like the captain of the Evergreen Guild. She nodded politely.

"Brown eyes?" Quinlin asked.

"It was unexpected," Alden agreed.

Fitz was busy studying the screens. He opened his mouth to say something, but Quinlin cut him off by handing Sophie a silver stick.

She glanced at it.

Was it a weapon? Were they testing her for something?

She was about to use her Technopathy on it to see what it was, but Fitz explained before she needed to.

"You lick it," he said.

She looked at him like he was crazy.

"It takes a sample of your DNA."

She gave the silver object a doubtful look before she brought it to her mouth and gave it a tiny lick. She almost dropped it a few seconds later when the word MATCH appeared in the center of the room in large green letters, along with two rotating strands of DNA.

"Match?" she questioned.

Quinlin stared at the word like it was a miracle. "So this is why Prentice sacrificed everything," he breathed.

"Who?" Sophie and Fitz asked at the same time.

She, of course, knew who Prentice was and what he had sacrificed.

Quinlin came to his senses. "Nothing," he said quickly. He pressed a button on one of the control panels that littered the table, and the hologram turned off.

"We found your DNA 12 years ago," Quinlin explained. "The Council believed it was a hoax, and forbade anyone from searching for it."

Sophie nodded. 12 years ago, meaning during Prentice's mind break. They must have found her DNA in his mind.
