Lorelei waited alone outside Slughorn's office

Lorelei waited alone outside Slughorn's office. Chatter, laughter, cups clinking, and other miscellaneous sounds floated through the corridor despite the door being shut.

Melissa and Elizabeth had already gone in without her, their respective dates had met them at the ravenclaw common room. But Lorelei had told James to meet her outside of the party.

But since the other girls had gone in, it had been twenty minutes. The clock hung on the wall ticked persistently as a torturous reminder that James Potter was late. Each minute was agony as she looked back and forth through the corridor waiting for the gryffindor to show up.

Her mind swirled wildly with theories on why he was late, if he had somehow forgotten, if he simply never showed up.

That train of thought quickly spiraled into self doubt, had he misinterpreted her words, had he decided their budding friendship was of no importance so much so that he wouldn't keep to his word.

"I'll be there." He had said, and at the time they had bolstered her spirits, but now as they replayed in her head they taunted her.

The deserted corridor echoed every shift she made. She told herself that if James was coming, she would hear him coming long before she would see him. But even straining her ears she only heard the sound of the party bursting through the door and her own movements.

Another glance at the clock, still taunting her, and she decided she'd had enough.

An almost foreign feeling budded in her throat. It had been so long since she felt it, but now that the feeling was there again she could recognise what was about to happen.

Taking a deep breath, then another, and a dozen more, Lorelei dispelled the knot in her throat.

"What am I doing?" She whispered to herself before going through the door to Slughorn's party.

She was dressed nicely, she had spent far too much time with Elizabeth and Melissa getting ready for it to go to waste because she was standing up.

Approaching Melissa first, who she had found refilling her cup at the punch bowl, she said, "He stood me up."

Melissa's expression softened, "I'm so sorry, Lori."

Crossing her arms, Lorelei felt her anger build as she spoke, "No, you know. He doesn't get to make me upset because I thought he would at least be decent enough to be a decent friend but clearly that's not the case. It's time to demonstrate to James Potter that I am not one to be fucked with."

Walking away from Melissa, leaving the other girl confused but also proud, Lorelei found Slughorn talking to Lily. "Lorelei!" He said in his raspy voice, "I'm so glad you came, Lily here was just telling me about her scores on the O.W.L.'s."

Lily nodded stiffly.

"Well, as invigorating as that must be," She said sarcastically, although Slughorn didn't seem to understand, "Would it be alright if I stole Lily away for a while? I have a question about an assignment I've been working on that I think she could help me with."
