FORGOTTEN ORCHIDS   |   CHAPTER ONE

HOUSE BLOSSOM ADVOCATED FOR PEACE, which was one of the only reasons Atticus Peregrine allowed himself to attend the semi-annual truce meetings, where he was surrounded by rulers that he knew only by name and looks. If it weren't for his council insisting on public appearances to please the citizens of other kingdoms and assure his own that peace was his goal, Atticus would still be at home, sorting through paperwork or tending to his bedroom's garden.

But despite the summer heat forcing his shirt to stick uncomfortably against his skin and the dark curls against his forehead becoming damp with sweat, he still found himself sitting beside Lord Sausage of Mythland for the first time that year, doing his best to ignore the taller man beside him.

If Atticus were to be honest with himself, he did not hate Lord Sausage. He also did not hate Count fWhip of the Grimlands, nor Lady Katherine. He didn't even dislike them, no matter how much Sausage claimed he did, but he did allow his expression to be irritated whenever they spoke—whenever anyone spoke, really. He had much better things to attend to than sitting in a meeting he had no interest in.

Truces were called when you were at war, but Atticus would never allow his kingdom to be pulled into such a mess.

"And for my last announcements of this meeting," Lady Katherine said, dipping her head in the direction of a few other rulers, "we have Emperor Joey from the Lost Empire, back from his months-long trip to the End." Atticus, along with the other rulers, politely clapped for the return of the blue-eyed king, who smiled at them all tiredly. Atticus had to wonder when Joey had arrived and how soon he'd needed to be ready for the meeting instead of resting after what had to be an exhausting trip.

"Thank you, friends," he said. "It's wonderful to be back!"

Katherine smiled at him before glancing at her parchment, reading her itinerary for the meeting. "Finally, House Blossom will be hosting a masquerade in winter of this year. Invitations will be sent out much closer to the date, but I wanted to tell you all in person so you'd have time to make plans." She beamed at all of them as there was a smattering of applause. "That's all from my side. Is there anyone else who wants to make an announcement or discuss something?"

Queen Lizzie's hand shot into the air immediately. Atticus almost flinched from how close she was to hitting him in the face, and while it wouldn't have been the first time, Atticus wouldn't blame her—he really should've learned to keep himself at least a foot away from her in occurrences like this.

"Queen Lizzie," Katherine acknowledged.

"I want to announce that axolotls are under my kingdom's protection," the pink-haired woman said. "I've received reports of some citizens of different empires killing them. I ask that each of you inform your citizens of the protection and, if axolotls are considered pests in your kingdom, please contact me and I will extract them for free," she explained.
