Together Again

I feel like all these adults act like running away is so bad. They don't understand though, there is a reason kids run.

I ran again. I ran and this time I'm never coming back. I'm done.

Goodbye Gills. Goodbye foster homes. Goodbye to that ugly little bitch in the mirror. I'm tired of the same old sucky stuff. It sucks.

I'm done relying on other people. No one has ever done anything for me but my papà. And my friends. I've missed my friends. I've really missed my friends.

I found a way to get in contact with Devin and Naomi. We're meeting not too far away from here. I've never been more excited in my life. My jumping heart leaves me skipping down the street.

A park with a curly yellow slide and blue swings comes into my view. It looks abandoned.

Abandoned completely, except for the two people sitting on those blue swings.

Naomi and Devin.

My smile is wide as I run quick. My fingers start tingling. Soon, I'm racing.

Naomi notices me. She jumps off her swing. I start running. She does too. When Devin notices, he's running faster than both of us.

And then I'm on the floor. Tackled. But I couldn't be happier to be in this position.

"Ells!" Naomi shouts happily. My chest feels like it's going to explode.

"Naomi." I say quietly, latching on harder.

"Elle Bell!" Devin tackles me into his arms and I'm laughing at hard he's squeezing me.

"Devin!" I feel like I'm floating.

We stand together, us three. I can't believe it. I can't believe we're here. Together.

"Listen." Devin sniffles. "You are," his finger pokes me in the chest, "never, ever doing that again!" I laugh, tears streaming. "Ever!"

"Okay!" I laugh sadly. "Okay."

My gaze softens to Naomi. "Fine. I'll admit it." Her tense shoulders deflate. "I've missed you." I break out into an uncontrollable laughter. A smile breaks on her face. "It's not so bad having you around."

"It's not so bad being around." I wipe my tears.

"So..," Devin looks off, squeezing my shoulders. "Where to next?" I smile softly.

"Let's flip?" Naomi suggests, digging a coin out of her pocket.

"Heads."

"Tails."

Both Naomi and I say synchronized. I bite back a silly smile.

The ping of the coin hits Naomi's fingernail and I watch as it rolls around in the air. Devin catches it then flips it.

Naomi and I lock eyes and smile, waiting.
