Chapter 34: Incident (Part 1)

Ryan rang the bell to the Dunphy house, and Claire quickly opened the door and let him in.
Claire - "Give her a moment. She is getting ready."
Ryan - "Yeah, no probs."
Ryan - "Hi, Phil"
Phil - "Hi"
Seeing Ryan standing by the dining table, Phil spoke, "Come on, sit down. There is no need to keep standing."
Ryan - "All right."
Ryan then headed towards the dining table and sat on the chair facing the opposite direction to Phil.
Claire didn't mind Ryan's presence and continued her work in the kitchen. A few moments later, Haley arrived, looking at her phone.
Haley - "Hi, Ryan"
Ryan - "Hi, Haley"
Haley - "Mom, I wanted to talk to you about something."
Claire - "Give me a second. All right, what do you wanna talk about?"
Haley - "Can you drive me to a concert?"
Claire - "Concert? what concert?"
Haley - "Everyone is going. It will only be a two-hour drive."
Ryan - "Everyone?"
Haley - "Yeah, all the cool kids."
Ryan - "Damn, why didn't I get an invite?"
Haley - "I am pretty sure Dylan asked you, and you said no."
Ryan - "Hmm, yes, the night concert on the 14th. I remember now. I canceled cause it was too far away, plus I already had an appointment to study with Alex."
Claire - "Night concert? Dylan?"
Ryan - "Yeah, Dylan's whole band is going to be there."
Haley - "Yes, and Dylan will drop me off once it's over."
Claire - "In that case, there is no chance you are going."
Haley - "Oh, come on."
Claire - "Your father and I are not going to drive for two hours to a concert, so you can go and spend the night with a bunch of boys. Especially with that 17-year-old hormone your dating."
Haley - "It's fully supervised."
Claire - "Oh really, By whom?"
Haley - "By spencer patine's uncle."
Claire - "Who is spencer patine?"
Haley - "You know Spencer, the guy with the arm."
Phil - "Okay, what kind of arm? What does that even mean? Ryan?"
Ryan replied in a robotic voice, "I don't know which Spencer she is talking about, so I can provide no further input."
Phil - "Woah, you sounded like a robot there."
Ryan - "I heard you like robots, so I have been practicing."
Haley - "Ryan, you don't have to always make this about you."
Ryan - "Come on, I was trying to buy you time to come up with a convincing argument."
Claire - "You are on Haley's side?"
Ryan - "Duh, it's just a concert. She isn't going to some slumber party."
Claire - "How did you know that?"
Ryan - "Know what? I was only giving an example. If you ask me at times, you can be too uptight."
Claire - "What?"
Ryan - "Phil, back me up, will you?"
Phil - "Clean your own mess. Don't look at me."
Claire - "You know what, this is my house. I don't think I need the permission of an outsider to decide how things work around here."
Haley - "Ouch."
Ryan - "You know what. You are right. I don't belong here."
Ryan gets up and starts to leave.
Phil - "Ryan."
Ryan acts like he heard nothing and starts heading for the door.
The moment he opens the door, he found Mitchell standing outside. Ryan was caught off guard by this new development.
Mitchell - "Ryan, what happened? Why do you look so sad."
When Ryan had spoken the line, he had done it unintentionally. It was a slip of his tongue, and he knew he was about to get violated.
So to not break character Ryan was forced into exiting. After all, he didn't care about what Claire said, but no thirteen years would stay after that.
On the inside, the only reason Ryan was able to look hurt was cause he was sad.
After all, it hurt knowing he wouldn't be able to earn more points.
Ryan - "It's nothing. All right, I will get going."
Dede - "Who is this dashing young man?"
Mitchell - "It's Ryan, Alex's boyfriend."
"This is Claire and my mom Dede."
Ryan - "Oh, nice to meet you, Dede."
Dede - "Likewise."
Ryan - "All right then, see you another time."
Dede quickly spoke, "Wait a minute, I am sensing something."
"The reason you are upset has something to do with Claire."
Ryan - "How did you know that?"
Dede - "It's a gift."
Commentary starts
Claire - "Of course, she guessed that. I am not even surprised at this point. Everything is always Claire's fault."
Commentary Ends
Ryan rings the doorbell, and Claire immediately opens the door.
Claire - "Ryan?"
Ryan - "Yeah"
Claire - "Look, Ryan. I didn't mean it."
Dede and Mitchell follow Ryan and also enter inside.
Claire - "Oh god, mom?"
Dede - "Yeah. You better apologize to him. You shouldn't say mean things like that to a kid."
Ryan - "Hey, I thought we had agreed that I would say it was a slip of the tongue, and you did ask Claire to forgive me."
Dede - "Sorry, kiddo, life isn't always fair."
Ryan - "She doesn't talk for me. I just wanted to apologize."
Claire whispered, "It's okay, Ryan. I think we have bigger issues to deal with here."
"So, mom. What brings you here?"
Dede - "Why so long, Claire?"
Claire - "I know it's a bit weird cause we haven't talked in a while."
Dede - "I mean your hair?"
Claire gets annoyed and steps away from Dede.
Dede - "If I can't tell you, who will?"
Mitchell - "So mom wants you to know she is very sorry about the incident and, she wants us to forgive her.
Ryan - "What incident?"
Claire - "Oh, nothing much, just her ruining dad and Gloria's wedding."
Mitchell - "And she feels extremely guilty about it."
Claire - "Nice for her to say that through you."
Claire then starts walking towards the living room.
Dede - "Do you see the sarcasm is so hurtful like a whip."
Ryan - "Wow, I did not see that coming."
Said a man who knew the plot of each episode so thoroughly that if there was a quiz on it, he did get two hundred out of one hundred.
Commentary starts
Claire is seen sitting on the sofa with Ryan.
Claire - "You know how there is always this voice inside our head that tells us that we are not good enough? Well, mine was outside my head driving me to school."
Ryan - "Wow that must have been horrible."
Commentary ends
