Backstory: Retro's parents were fascinated with the history of the Chaos Emeralds and taught him all about them. One day, their jungle home was caught in the crosshairs of a battle. It was destroyed and his parents helped Retro escape, though they couldn't themselves. Thinking they were dead, he flew away. He formerly opposed Sonic and the Freedom Fighters, and would steal the Chaos Emeralds in hopes they could bring back his parents. Eventually, he gave up on that when he was fifteen and reformed. Now, he'll team up with Rouge and snag the Chaos Emeralds to mess with Knuckles.
