No one's POV
It's been a few days since you found out that your blood tests came back clear. Barnes is already working on your paperwork. You leave in 3 days, and you still haven't told your family. You send a message to our group chat to do a group FaceTime. Everyone responds and agrees.
"Hi guys, I just wanted to let you all know that I am returning to the Army and I actually leave for deployment in 3 days for a mission. I know you guys are probably not happy with my decision but I've put a lot of thought into it and I've already been cleared to go." You say
Everyone was silent for a few minutes.
"Well, if that's what you think you should do, of course we support it." Says your mother. Your father just nodded with what your mom said.
"Just come back in one piece." Says Channing
"Yes, please stay safe." Says Tyler
Christen was silent and so was Tobin. They were both at training with the USWNT.
everyone leaves besides Tobin and Christen.
"Chris say something please." You say
"Y/n are you insane? You have been on two deployments and have almost been killed twice! Not to mention you were almost killed less than one month ago! " Says Christen finally breaking her silence.
"I know." You say
This has to do with Mal doesn't it? She says
"No, it has nothing to do with her. I'm doing this for me. Shes had almost a month to reach out to me. I can't wait for her forever. " You say
"Your head is clear? You aren't just going because you don't have a reason to stay here?" Asks Tobin
"Of course, I have a reason to stay here. You guys are here. Just because Mal and I broke up doesn't mean I'm going to get there and hope I get killed in combat." You say
"Y/n I swear to god you better be safe! Do not be a hero and get yourself killed!" Says Christen
"I will be careful Chris, I promise." You say.
"You better because your going to be the maid of honor in our wedding next year." Says Christen
"I wouldn't miss it." You say
"How long is your deployment?" Asks Tobin
"It depends on how the mission goes, I will get debriefed when I get there and let you guys know." You say
"Are you announcing it at all?" Asks Christen
"No, I wasn't planning on it. Just planned on telling close friends and family." You say
"Do you care if we tell Jill and the rest of the team?" Asks Tobin
"You can if you want too." You say
"Alright, well we gotta leave for team dinner." Says Christen
"Have fun, I love you guys." You say
"We love you too." they both say in unison before ending the call.
You feel better now that your family knows and supports it. You finish packing up the rest of the stuff that you don't need while you are gone. Since movers will be taking it to a storage center for you tomorrow. You get a call from Barnes and you answer it and put it on speaker.
"Hey B, what's up?" You ask
"Hey, so I just got your papers finalized. You sure you want to do this?" He asks
"Positive." You say
"Does Mal even know your leaving?" He asks
"No, it's not like she would suddenly start responding to my calls or texts anyways." You say
"I think you should call her and tell her." He says
"I'll think about it." You say
"Alright, I'll send you the flight information and everything once I'm home." He says
"Sounds good B, thanks." You say
"See you Monday." He says before hanging up.
You wrap up packing and get showered before heading to bed.
*Skipping to Monday*
Your alarm goes off early, you get showered and dressed in your uniform. It's weird to be back in it. You called an Uber so your car doesn't sit in the airport parking lot the whole time. Once you receive notification that your driver is there, you lock up your apartment and head out to the car.
"Do you mind stopping at the clubhouse, I need to return my key." You say
You had already told the office what time you planned on coming in so they could have the paperwork and everything ready. The driver nods and you head inside to return your key, parking pass and sign the paperwork. After that you head back to the car to get to the airport. You get to the airport and grab your bags, thanking the driver. You get your bag checked in and head to security before making your way through the airport to your boarding area.
As your walking you see your entire family waiting there with signs.
"Surprise!" They yell
"Oh my god! What are you guys doing here?" You ask as you hug all of them.
"You thought we would send you off with just a FaceTime call?" Asks Channing
"We know you have to get going but please be safe." Says your Mom
"I will I promise, I will let you guys know when I land." You say giving everyone one last hug.
"You have a stop in Colorado, right?" Asks Christen
"Yeah, I think it's got a 2-hour layover." You say
Okay, we love you be safe. Says Christen
"I will, I love you guys too." You say as you pick your bag up and continue to your boarding area."
You can hear footsteps that sounded like someone was running. Probably a person running late to their flight. You feel someone crash into you almost knocking you over but you manage to stabilize yourself. They had their arms wrapped around you tightly. You immediately know who it is.
"Mal? What are you doing here?" You ask
"Y/n I'm so sorry I shouldn't have walked out on you that day at the hospital. I was so hurt, and I realized I needed to step away and work through some issues I had going on." She says out of breath from running.
"I understand that, but why the silence for so long, you could have sent me a text and told me that." You say hugging her back.
You wanted to be mad at her but for some reason you couldn't.
I know and I was so stupid for doing that, I thought if I did that I would be able to process everything quicker by not being distracted. Will you please forgive me?" She says
"I will on one condition." You say
"I'll do anything." She says
"If you ever need to step away again, just tell me. Please don't ever do this to me again." You say
"I don't plan on ever doing this again, but I promise." She says
You crash your lips onto hers and she immediately kisses you back.
"I have to go." You say after you slowly pull away from her.
"I know. I'm on the same flight as you." She says
"Wait, you got on a flight to see me for 5 minutes just to fly back home?" You ask
"I only found out last night that you were leaving and got the first flight I could. I didn't have time." She says
You can't help but smile.
"I love you Y/n and I want us to get married." She says
"I need time to think about it." You say and her face drops.
"I'm kidding. Of course, I love you and want to marry you." You say
"God! Don't do that!" She says smacking your shoulder playfully and you pull her into a hug.
"Y/n!" Yells Christen
You walk back down to the entrance, and she tosses you a box. You open it and its yours and Mals rings.
"You knew about this?" You ask
"Maybe." She says as she turns around and jogs back to the rest of my family.
You put the ring back on Mal and slowly put your back on. It kinda feels weird to be back on your finger. We head to the boarding area and talk the entire time. Once its time to board they get buckled in and continue to talk all through the flight. Mal stays the entire layover and your flight is finally boarding. You take your ring off and hand it to her.
"Keep this safe for me until I get home?" You ask
"You better come back alive and in one piece." She says hugging you one final time.
"I will try my hardest too." You say kissing her forehead.
"I love you so much." She says
"I love you more." You say
You pick your bag up and head to the boarding area so they can scan your ticket. You turn, smile and wave to Mal before heading down the hallway to the plane.
