Chris wakes up at about 9:45 the next morning to the sound of his text message notification sound. He blinks a couple of times, then reaches for his phone. He had a text from McKayla. Chris smiled, then opened the text.

Chris, this is Sophie. Get to McKayla's apartment as soon as you can. It's an emergency.

Well THAT couldn't be good.

Chris immediately got up and started getting ready, trying to call McKayla as he did so. She didn't answer. If he wasn't worried before, he sure was now.

"McKayla, honey, just try to calm down. It probably isn't as bad as you think." Sophie says.

"How can it not be as bad as I think? If anything, it's probably worse!"

The door opens to reveal Chris, holding up a key.

"Uh, what the Hell? You never lock your door." Chris says, walking in and shutting the door behind him. He shoves the key back into his pocket.

"Well I do now." McKayla says, "What are you doing here?"

"I texted him from your phone and told him to come here." Sophie says.

"What?"

"Kayla, what's going on?" Chris asks.

McKayla sighs, then picks up an envelope siting on the coffee table. She takes out the papers inside and hangs them to Chris. He skims through it, then looks back up to McKayla.

"Jamie's up for parole?"

McKayla nods, "And they want me to go in for his hearing and speak; tell them whether or not Jamie deserves parole."

"Are you gonna go?"

"Of course! I don't want a psycho like him out on the streets! I'm just angry and upset that they even considered him for parole after all that he did to me! He killed my father, he was charged for assault, rape, abuse - "

"Wait, what?" Chris asks "I mean, I knew about the assault and stuff, but..."

Sophie stands, "I'm gonna head home and let you two talk. Call me if you need anything." She says before grabbing her things and walking out of the apartment.

Chris just stands there a moment, unable to believe what he'd just heard.

"McKayla..."

McKayla's bottom lip quivers and she crosses her arms over her chest. Chris takes a step toward her, hesitantly. McKayla walks into his arms and puts her head on his chest, beginning to cry. Chris wraps his amrs around her, trying to comfort her.

"He told me he'd kill the people I loved if I didn't do what he said." McKayla says, breaking the embrace. She begins to pace.

"I mean, he'd already killed my dad, so I absolutely believed him." McKayla says, "And let's not forget he made me crash my mom's car! He told me I had to kill myself or he'd go after all of my friends and family! Because my brother killed his friend's brother! I mean why?! Why would the authorities even consider letting someone like him out in the world again?!"

Chris steps forward and hugs her again, "They won't. Just tell them everything you just told me. That son of a bitch isn't going anywhere near you." He says before kissing the top of her head, "I'm here for you, okay?"

They break the embrace and McKayla nods, "Thank you...I'm sorry I didn't call you. I just didn't want you to worry about me."

"Well please, if something like this ever happens again, please tell me. I want to help. I want to make sure you feel better, but you've gotta let me in."
