PRATAP GARH:-
I recoiled at the sound of footsteps approaching, followed by a sharp voice breaking through the stillness of the night.
"Who's there at this hour? Who are you, brother? What do you want? If you needed something, you should've asked the guard outside. And what are you doing with the prince's horse? You know this beast is wild and untamable. Only the prince... or that sorceress can handle him."
That Sorceress? My brow furrowed, a knot of confusion forming in my chest. Who was he talking about?
I stepped closer, keeping my voice low but firm.
"And what exactly do you mean by that cursed girl?"
The man stiffened, clearly startled by my presence.
"H-Hukum, I didn't mean-"
He stammered, his eyes wide with surprise.
"Who were you talking about?"
I pressed, ignoring his hesitation. Something in his tone had shifted, a sharpness I didn't like.
"Well... I mean no disrespect, Hukum, but... her. You know, the one people have been... talking about,"
He mumbled, looking anywhere but at me, as if afraid of saying the wrong thing.
I stepped forward, my confusion mixing with a growing sense of unease.
"Talking about what? Spit it out."
He hesitated again, glancing toward the stable door as if considering fleeing.
"I... It's not my place, Hukum. People just... they say things."
My patience was wearing thin.
"What things? Stop stalling."
His mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water, struggling to find words that wouldn't condemn him.
"It's just that... people don't trust her. They think she brings misfortune. Ever since the queen of Shamsher Garh died, and with all the unrest..."
He trailed off, clearly uncomfortable. My muscles tensed. This wasn't just idle gossip; there was something more to it, something heavier. The knot in my chest tightened.
