"Tragedy. What else can I call it? What more need be said? The damage, the destruction, you saw it with your own eyes. When will people wake up and realize that everywhere Spider-Man goes, chaos and calamity ensue? Everything Spider-Man touches comes to ruin. And we, the innocents, are left to pick up the pieces."

-J. Jonah Jameson, Spider-man: No Way Home, 2021.

seokmin walked into the familiar lab room, steps hesitant and eyes dull. he hasn't been in here for about a week since he was recovering from being literally thrown into a booth at fairfest by dino, but the break from going to wencorp didn't feel long enough. just being in this environment made seokmin want to rip his heart out of his chest.

"seokmin. you're back. how's your head?"

while the professor's words seemed concerned, the tone of voice he said them in were anything but that.

"uh," seokmin touched his hair tentatively, "it's a lot better now. i just know i'll be a lot more careful when reaching for stuff now."

yeah, uh, seokmin kinda lied about why he needed to be on leave for his internship. obviously, he couldn't say what really happened because if professor wen knew that he was at fairfest to watch for shubot, then he would receive a lot of unwanted questions.

so he just said he was reaching for something on a high shelf in his closet and he got conked on the head. it was the perfect excuse and it worked.

"great," the professor didn't even look up from what he was doing, "go put your lab coat on."

seokmin nodded slowly. "yes, professor, i-"

he stopped. something caught his eye.

seokmin let out a small gasp. "why is joshua still here? have you guys been keeping him since fairfest?"

"yes, we have," minghao, who was typing away on his laptop responded, "after we used him i noticed his chip was having some malfunctions so we decided to keep him here because it's dangerous for him to be out there until it is completely fixed. we don't want there to be any repeats of what happened last time."

seokmin furrowed his eyebrows, sliding on his lab coat. "last time? what happened last time?"

"when we first did the chip experiments years ago we had some problems with compatibility and the regulations they had with the individual nervous systems." minghao looked up from his laptop, "it caused a multitude of problems. some of the subjects we had in our trials, we weren't able to connect properly and it ruined their nervous systems. some of them had problems with moving and basic function, others had more... fatal problems."
