I understand. Dumarating talaga tayo sa point na nadi-distract lagi tayo sa inner critic natin, leading for us to overthink like, "what if mali pala masulat ko?" Valid, but it's important for us to remember na okay lang kung hindi perfect lalo na kung drafting stage pa lang 'yan. May revision stage pa. Besides, before ma-publish 'yan as a book, dadaan pa 'yan sa editor. May tutulong sa 'yo sa creative process.
For now, tulungan mo muna sarili mong tapusin 'yong story without pressuring yourself to be perfect. Hindi dapat minamadali ang proseso. Kumbaga, baby ka pa lang when it comes to writing. In every writing project naman, kahit gaano na tayo katagal magsulat, we're always baby when it comes to first draft.
It's not necessary to focus on perfecting the first draft. Yeah, it's good that you have the desire perfecting it (applause for the desire to master your craft), pero puwede kasing maging reason 'yan bakit hindi ka makapagsulat. Worst? Hindi ka makatapos ng story kaiisip mo sa perfection. Walang usad, overthinking palagi. Nagiging block 'yan sa creative flow.
Even the well known writers, not just in Philippines, would give the same advice. Perfection is impossible when it comes to writing. Meron at meron dapat i-improve. At sino ba nagsabi na dapat "perfect" na agad tayo sa pagsusulat? (I once asked this to myself haha) Chill, give yourself permission to be a beginner, and enjoy your process of learning as you write. Sulat muna.
Once you're writing the first draft, just let it flow. Mag-focus sa pagtapos muna ng story. Ano naman ngayon kung messy 'yong first draft? At least may natapos ka. May ma-e-edit ka, kesa naman sa blank page. Focus on finishing it first. Then allot time for editing. For now, train your mind to write first. Try your best na tapusin mo muna. Saka na 'yang editing. Sulat ka muna.
Ako I've been training my mind to embrace perfect imperfection when I write, instead of perfection. When I do the latter, I would feel drained. Nagkakaroon ng block sa creativity ko. Instead of focusing on doing it with love, I'm writing out of fear. Parang minamadali ko rin creative process ko.
Let's remember to write first and always have the courage to write imperfectly. Improvements will follow. And make sure we enjoy what we do and be in the present moment to enjoy our writing process.
