Sean sat the file down on the emergency nurse's station desk and frowned when he felt his phone vibrate. Before he had a chance to pull it out to look the doors slid open and the room got suddenly louder with various people talking at the same time. One voice caught his attention, making him quickly turn around to assess the situation.
"DR. SEAN!"
"Jade?" Sean asked confused as he rushed over to her and, "Brandon?"
"Tried calling you but—"
"I've been swamped," Sean interrupted trying to explain, "what happened?"
"First and second degree burns from hot food," one of the paramedics stated. "She also has a piece of ceramic plate in her stomach."
"What the hell happened to our fiancé?" Sean asked angrily.
"Dr. Sean," Jade whimpered as more tears slipped down her face.
"I got you, Jade," Sean said gently as he pulled some gloves on. "I promise. I'll take good care of you."
"I'm sorry," she whispered as Brandon pushed a strand of hair out of her face. "Cause problems."
"Hey now, Babe," Brandon frowned, "you did nothing wrong. That asshole caused all this and I promise Mr. B will make sure he get's what he deserves."
"Come on, Jade, let's get you in the back so I can start making you all better, okay?" Sean asked.
"No," she whispered as her eyes widened even more and her hands started to tremble, "please no."
"She's terrified of the hospital, Doc," Brandon said. "She started panicking when her friend said she needed the hospital. She refused to be strapped down on the board to keep from moving also. She doesn't want to be here, Doc, she's clearly traumatized for some reason."
"Jade," Sean said bending over so he was closer to her. "I know you're scared but I promise nothing bad will happen to you. I will be by your side the entire time. I promise I won't leave you alone. Can you try and trust me, please?"
"I'll be with you too, Babe," Brandon smiled softly. "I did promise to protect you and not leave your side after all. I hold pinky promises very seriously. I'm trying to get ahold of Corey too."
"I try," she whispered sniffling. "Promise?"
Both Sean and Brandon smiled fondly, "We promise."
"I'll protect you like Bam Bam protects Pebbles," Brandon smiled gently.
"Do you have any allergies, Jade?" Sean asked as he and Brandon started to push the bed down the hall.
"Sulfur group," she murmured as her breathing started to come in quick gasps. "No, no, no."
"Doc," Brandon growled. "You're okay, Babe, we're here, you're safe."
"Just breathe, Jade," Sean said as he pushed her into the room right next to his office and placed the oxygen mask on her face. "In and out, Jade, nice and slow. Sit with her, Brandon."
Brandon got into the bed next to her and cupped her face into his hands. "Just breathe, Pebbles," he said gently, "I've got you, you're safe, I promise."
"Sweetheart, what the hell happened?" Corey asked as he burst into the room. "Are you okay?"
"No, she isn't," Brandon shook his head. A couple of moments later, the rest of the group arrived.
"Who do we have here?" A woman that looked like Kota walked in with a motherly smile on her face.
"Momma, you're working today?" Corey asked. "This is Jade, our fiancé. She got hurt at work."
"Jade, this is Kota's mom Erica, she is my nurse and will be helping me take care of you. I sent her a text to come in down from labor and delivery to help me and so you can meet her. Momma Erica, this is our wonderful Jade," Sean said as he started assessing the wound on her stomach. "Brandon, tell us what exactly happened."
Brandon recalled what happened as Sean gave her a shot to numb the area. Once he was sure that she couldn't feel anything, he removed the piece of ceramic and started to clean the area, making sure there were no shards still in her. After he was certain she was okay and nothing was nicked, he began stitching it up while Erica started working on cleaning the burns on her. Erica told her all kinds of stories while she was cleaning her up not only to help distract her but also to take the opportunity to embarrass the boys as much as she could.
"So how do you know the boys?" Erica asked as she finished bandaging her arm.
"We went to school together," Jade whimpered into the oxygen mask.
"And why haven't I heard about her and this engagement before?" Erica asked, turning to the group.
"They said it after they dropped out of university and resigned after I was kicked out," Jade gasped. "They didn't even ask me, they just kind of claimed me after meeting me a few days ago."
"You and I have been talking for a few years now, Sweetheart, in our chat—" Corey smirked fondly.
"Oh, you're Corey's little online pen pal," Erica beamed. "It's wonderful that you have finally met up. Well, it's no wonder that they have claimed you. That does sound like them." Erica chuckled, she stood and winked, "I want to hear all about it later, but the medicine Sean just gave you will make you sleepy, so rest and I'll come check on you later, okay? Welcome to the family, Dear. I know Kota's sister Jessica is going to be so excited to meet you, but I'll give you a few days before I bring her around. She's full of energy and you need to rest."
"Thank you," Jade whispered as she fought to stay awake.
"You can sleep, Sweetheart," Corey whispered as he gently held her hand in his, intertwining their fingers. "You are safe, I promise."
"No," she shook her head. "I fine."
"Okay, Sweetheart," Corey smiled, knowing that now wasn't the time to try and argue with her, besides she was being so adorable despite the pain she was obviously in. "Well, how about we watch something together while we wait for the bloodwork from Sean to come back? What do you want to watch?"
"Oy, how about the Descendants?" Gabe asked. "Or Cruella?"
"Really?" she asked with a slight hopefulness in her tone.
"Fuck yeah," Gabe beamed, "I fucking made the guys get Disney plus because I fucking love Disney and they have fucking everything. Have you seen Descendants or Cruella?"
"No," she whispered, "wanted to but—"
"Hell yeah," Gabe said as he plopped down on the bed by her knees, "which one first?"
"Cruella?" she asked nervously, "since there are 3 Descendants that's more of a rainy day thing."
"Cruella it is," Corey smiled as everyone grabbed their phones and logged into Disney plus so they could watch it together.
Not even thirty minutes into the movie Jade fell asleep, making everyone smile as she leaned into Corey even more. He kissed the top of her head and looked over at Sean. "How serious is it, Doc?"
"She's clearly traumatized by hospitals and when I was looking at her records I can see why," Sean whispered sadly. They looked at him and he cleared his throat, "Did you see her arms when Momma was cleaning her?"
Corey looked down as Sean gently turned her hands over so her wrists were facing up. Now that all her bracelets were removed Corey could see that on her left wrist was Spyro playing a game on a laptop with the words Not Today right on her wrists with Spyro above the words and on her right wrist was a kitten all curled up and a cloud above its head with swirls and colors blending together to show that it was dreaming and under the sleeping kitten right on the wrist were the words Just Breathe.
Corey's breath hitched as tears filled his eyes as he lifted his face to look at Sean with worry and fear. Sean nodded, "The last two times she was brought into the hospital she was put in the psychiatric ward on a suicide watch. Corey, she almost succeeded in her attempts. Her last attempt was shortly before you met her."
