We use this phrase post-college all the time. We implore college graduates to "make a name for themselves." As though, who they are now, is not possibly enough. We imply they haven't learned or garnered enough skills to succeed in the "real world." We hand them fear, shame, and self-doubt along with their diplomas and what for?
Perhaps we should try handing them encouragement to live life authentically. If we choose to celebrate the curiosity, exploration and identity-building that comes from that phase of life we have the opportunity to produce a new generation of people who do not fear who they are born as and instead embrace their livelihood.
