Chapter 67

"Where are we?" Peter asked looking outside. At first he didn't want to come with us but he agreed after I talked to him and he was now in the same car as me, David and Thiago.

"You'll see." David told him as he kept driving. "We'll be there in a few."

"I hope there's no scavenger hunt this time. I'm all for adventures generally, but..."

"No, no scavenger hunt. I was thinking of a contest of some sort but it was all so last minute and my guy isn't in Rio."

"Your guy?" I asked him, the irony evident in my voice.

"You know, the parties and events guy that hooks me up with whatever I need. Be it fireworks—"

"Illegal." I commented and Thiago and Peter started laughing.

"Exotic pets—"

"Also illegal."

"And everything in between." He finished.

"What kind of exotic pets?" Peter asked and he seemed genuinely interested.

"I wanted to adopt a white tiger but I had a little trouble getting it through customs."

"Maybe your guy isn't that good."

"He did get me two peacocks for a garden party though!"

"Is he for real?" Peter asked.

"You know, I'm not sure if he's joking or not..." I said glancing at David who had an evil grin on his face.

"We're here." David said as he stopped the car. "And we are the first ones here." He added as we got out of the car.

"So where are we?" Peter asked again. I looked around at the trees and mountains. I couldn't say we were in the middle of nowhere exactly but it was close.

"Serra dos Órgãos!" David exclaimed.

"Meaning?"

"It's a mountain range; it roughly translates to the Range of the Organs." Thiago informed us.

"And why are here exactly?" I asked.

"Oh poor Liv, allergic to nature!" David mocked me.

"I'm not!"

"There's a National Park here, one of the biggest ones in Brazil." Thiago said as Dani's car pulled up next to ours and Dani, Marcelo, Hulk and Oscar came out of it.

"We are waiting for the last car and we are off!" David said. "We are going to see the Dedo de Deus rock first—"

"We are going to see a rock?" Marina yelled as she got out of Willian's car.

 "Yeah it's famous. It means God's Finger and it's called that because it resembles a left hand with its index finger stretched, pointing towards the sky."

"And we are gonna hike to see that? Practice would have been less brutal." Marina said and Bernard started whispering in her ear. "Fine, fine." She told him. "Let's do this!" She said loudly then and everyone laughed except for David and Peter, but I suspected the latter had his own reasons.

We started the hike after David distributed water bottles that he had brought in a backpack. "There are some natural springs along the way where we can refill." David started as he opened a big map he had and studied it.

It was high noon and the sun was so bright in the sky that I believed that Marina wasn't exaggerating when she said 'brutal'. "Scolari will be very happy to hear we went for a hike. It's great conditioning." Thiago said as he walked next to me. I wanted to say something mean but held back. Sweating under the hot sun tended to make me angry.
