I sit there, aware that every head in the Great Hall has turned to look at Harry and Danny. They look stunned. I am, too. I feel numb. I am surely dreaming. I did not hear correctly.
There is no applause. A buzzing, as though of angry bees, is starting to fill the Hall; some students are standing up to get a better look of Harry and Danny as they sit, frozen, in their seats.
Up at the top table, Professor McGonagall has got to her feet and sweeps past Ludo Bagman and Professor Karkaroff to whisper urgently to Professor Dumbledore, who bends his ear towards her, frowning slightly.
Harry and Danny turn to Ron, Hermione and I; either side of us, the long Gryffindor table is watching them, open mouthed.
"We didn't put our names in," Danny says blankly. "You know we didn't."
All of us just stare as blankly back.
At the top table, Professor Dumbledore has straightened up, nodding to Professor McGonagall.
"Harry Potter and Dathaniel Rivera!" he calls again. "Harry! Dathaniel! Up here, if you please!"
"Go on," Hermione whispers, giving them a slight push.
Harry and Danny get to their feet, tread on the hems of their robes and stumble slightly. They set off between the Gryffindor and Hufflepuff tables. It feels like an immensely long walk; time seems to slow as I watch my twin brother and best friend walking towards the top table, which doesn't seem to be getting any nearer at all. I can see hundreds of eyes upon them, as though each is a searchlight. The buzzing grows louder and louder. After after what seems like an hour, they are right in front of Dumbledore, the stares of all the teachers upon them.
"Well...through the door, Harry, Dathaniel," says Dumbledore. He isn't smiling.
Harry and Danny move off along the teachers' table. Hagrid is sat right at the end. He does not wink at Harry or Danny, or wave, or give any of his usual signs of greeting. He looks completely astonished, and stares at Harry and Danny as they pass, like everyone else. Harry and Danny go through the door out of the Great Hall.
