Katie is removed to St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries the following day, by which time the news that she was cursed has spread all over the school, though the details are confused and nobody other than Harry, Danny, Ron, Hermione, Leanne and I seem to know that Katie herself was not the intended target.

"Oh, and Malfoy knows, of course," says Harry to Ron, Hermione and I, who continue our new policy of feigning deafness whenever Harry mentions his Draco-is-a-Death-Eater theory.

I have wondered whether Dumbledore will return from wherever he has been in time for Harry's Monday night's lesson, but having no word on the contrary, he leaves the portrait hole at ten to eight, but not before he pulls me to one side and tells me something I never thought he would again.

"Dawn, listen, things haven't really been going too well, have they? I mean, we're fighting all the time and it can get really awkward when it's in front of - "

"So what are you saying?" I demand, controlling my voice, holding his gaze defiantly. But before he can answer, before another boy can break my heart yet again, I say, "Never mind. You're right. We should break up. The Chosen One is too good for me. I know where I'm not wanted. But that's OK. You're easily replaced. I'll introduce you to my new future boyfriend some time." I turn, my hair whipping him across the face, and stride down the corridor. I don't stop when I reach the stairs, nor when I'm on the next level down. I keep descending until I reach the Entrance Hall, where there are a great many choices. The first boy to catch my eye, however, is Harper, who is in Slytherin house. What his first name is, I couldn't tell you.

"Oi, Harper!" I call, striding over to him. "I just broke up with Potter." I grab the neck of his robes and pull his mouth towards mine. I can feel the stares and hear the whispers of people around me and our lips caress each other, but they all pretend to be looking in different directions when we pull apart.

"So...?" says Harper, grinning.

"So what?"

"So do I get to go to bed Sutherland one of the hottest girls in school?"

I pause, considering his words carefully. I must be cool and calm, and mustn't reject him straightaway, because I just kissed him...but at the same time I don't want another Slytherin boyfriend so soon...

"Here's what I propose," I tell him decisively. "If Slytherin win the next Quidditch match, I'll be your girlfriend. If Gryffindor win, you'll never get to feel my lips against yours again." I almost snort with laughter. As if Slytherin could win with Harry as captain.

I smile and turn away, making sure to glance over my shoulder at him as I leave.
