Chapter 19

The weekend had already arrived, yet he found himself oddly alert at 4 a.m., unable to return to the solace of sleep. He couldn't shake the feeling of being observed and trailed in the past two days, a sense of unease that had disrupted his once restful nights. With an unquenchable thirst gnawing at him, he ventured from his room to the kitchen.

Sitting in the dimly lit kitchen, he stared at the empty cup, the remnants of water the only company he had. His mind wandered to the perplexing dreams that had been plaguing him. These dreams were as elusive as they were disquieting, compounding the unease that clung to him like a shroud.

Kim Jae-soo couldn't help but wonder: had he ever felt such a sensation of being watched during his past life, or had he been blissfully unaware? As he ruminated, one particular dream played on an incessant loop in his mind.

In the dream, he stood across from a man, cradling a weeping child in his arms. The details were initially hazy, his mind caught in the disarray of slumber. The child's cries tugged at his heartstrings, compelling him to approach, to offer solace. But an invisible force held him at bay. Helplessly, he could only watch as the man gently placed an urn on a table that appeared to belong to a home office. Gradually, the child's sobs ebbed into soft whimpers, and then, finally, a peaceful slumber.

The man tenderly arranged the child on a plush-looking couch, draping his coat over him as he settled in a chair at the office desk, next to the urn. The man's head sunk into his hands, his shoulders quaking with the weight of an invisible burden. Kim Jae-soo felt an overwhelming urge to comfort the man, to understand, but every time he tried to move closer, his surroundings blurred, and he was immobilized.

"I'm sorry," the man whispered hoarsely, his gaze locked on the urn as he caressed its ceramic surface. Each time he spoke, Kim Jae-soo's vision grew blurry, and he felt as though he were anchored in place, a helpless observer to this poignant scene.

This was how the dream ended with him feeling like he had survived from drowning, sighing softly he couldn't go back to sleep because he was fully awake or so he thought.

His mind still occupied by the haunting dreams, Jae-soo wandered to the living room, where he found comfort in the familiar hum of the refrigerator and the soft glow of the streetlights filtering through the curtains. The city outside was slowly waking up, the early risers beginning their day, unaware of the turmoil that gripped his heart.

As he sank into the couch, his thoughts continued to swirl. He couldn't help but question the significance of the dreams. Was his subconscious trying to tell him something, or were they mere figments of his overactive imagination? The man in the dream felt familiar, yet he couldn't place him. And the child's cries... they echoed a sorrow he couldn't quite grasp.

He rubbed his temples, trying to dispel the lingering fog of sleep.

After some time, Jae-soo unknowingly fell asleep.

"Jae-soo?!" An Na-ri was surprised to see Kim Jae-soo curled up in a fetal position on the couch in the living room. He had noticed that since a day ago, Jae-soo had been on edge, and he didn't know how to help his friend.

Not wanting to disturb Jae-soo, Na-ri went into the kitchen to get their breakfast ready. His mother had prepared and packed readymade home food for him, and all he had to do was microwave it. He set the table slowly, trying not to wake the tired Jae-soo.

"Where is dammy?" A small voice, which Jae-soo believed to be his son's, whimpered. The scene in front of him showed his son staring at a photo of Jae-soo with a smile. The boy's chubby index finger rubbed the photograph as big tears glided down his cheeks. Feeling distressed, Jae-soo rushed up to him but couldn't do anything; his hands passed through his son.

"Dammy, when are you coming back? Papa is sad too," Baek Mi-reu's words shocked Jae-soo. What was he talking about? Who was missing who?

"Papa doesn't talk much anymore," his words were unclear. No matter how hard Jae-soo tried, he just couldn't understand his child's mumbles. When he attempted to reply, his words came out muddled and incoherent. As Jae-soo watched his distressed son clutch the cherished photograph to his chest and move out of the room, he heard the sound of a car pulling up outside. It was as though an invisible force had taken hold, leaving Jae-soo feeling suspended and submerged, much like in the recurring dream.

Gasping for breath and awakening with a start, Jae-soo's eyes darted around the room, a palpable sense of panic dissipating as he registered his surroundings. He realized he had fallen asleep on the couch, the dream still lingering in his mind like a phantom.

"Jae-soo?" An Na-ri's gentle voice called out, breaking through his disoriented state. "Breakfast is ready."

Jae-soo sat up, still feeling the remnants of the dream clinging to him. He tried to shake it off as he joined Na-ri at the table. The aroma of the freshly microwaved home food filled the kitchen, providing a sense of comfort and normalcy.

After breakfast, Na-ri took the initiative to collect the dirty plates and place them in the dishwasher. He then rushed to the living room, where Kim Jae-soo sat deep in thought, his expression a mix of curiosity and concern. There was something Na-ri wanted to say, a burden he seemed to carry.

"I want..." Na-ri started, pausing as he searched for the right words. Kim Jae-soo, worn but ready to listen, encouraged him to share.

Na-ri took a deep breath and continued, "My grandmother on my father's side has arranged my marriage to..." Another pause, more fidgeting, as the weight of the words hung in the air. Kim Jae-soo offered understanding and support, allowing Na-ri to speak his truth.

"I am engaged to Man Sung-ho," Na-ri finally revealed. Kim Jae-soo's brow furrowed, puzzled but not yet alarmed. Na-ri looked at him, his eyes betraying the worry he'd been harboring.

And then the bombshell: "Man Sung-ho is Baek Ji Hu's best friend."

Kim Jae-soo felt like he was trapped within a frigid ice cave, a paralyzing sensation gripping his every thought. His emotional turmoil left him at a loss for words, rendering him unable to articulate the intensity of his feelings. Desperate for respite, he shut his eyes and attempted to ease into the embrace of the couch, seeking solace from the overwhelming distress.
