Trigger warning [self-harm, domestic violence and so one]
Chapter 27
PAST.
"Please, I want to go back home," the ger cried out, his voice weak from endless begging and pleading. His hands clutched his knees, shaking. Who gets used to fear, he thought, feeling the weight of hopelessness press down on him. He had no way out, and no one was coming to save him.
"Please, I don't want to be here anymore," he whispered, his tears long dried up. He felt like he had lost all the water from his body through his tear ducts.
He had been locked in the dark closet for what felt like an eternity. His eyes hurt, and his head felt heavy. His father, stepmother, and sister had berated him for the leaked video that supposedly showed his promiscuity.
"I told you not to bring him back, but you never listen," his stepmother had spat, glaring at him with disdain. To her, he was a bastard, just like his mother.
"He will still be useful to us," Choi Min-Jun had said coldly, devoid of any sympathy. To him, everything was a passing scenery to be used or enjoyed, then discarded. He glanced at his watch, then stood up and left the house, mumbling about business to attend to.
As soon as he left, Choi Su-Jin, who had been silent in her father's presence, slapped the already crying ger and yanked him up by his hair. No matter how much he cried and begged, she and her mother pushed him into the dark, cramped closet.
This had become a usual punishment since two months after he arrived, and now, a year later, they knew he was a coward who wouldn't defend himself against their lies, bullying, and assaults.
Inside the closet, the darkness was suffocating. His body ached from being cramped in such a small space for so long. His mind was a whirlwind of fear and despair. He hugged his knees tighter, trying to make himself as small as possible, hoping that if he was small enough, they might forget about him.
He tried to remember happier times, but they seemed so distant, like they belonged to another life. The warmth of his mother's embrace, the sound of her laughter—these memories were fading, replaced by the harsh reality of his current existence.
That day, Su-Jin had set up Kim Jae-soo, but he didn't meet the right people. Still, he ended up sleeping with an unknown man. She had obtained footage of Kim Jae-soo's face clearly and felt grateful, despite not knowing who had sent it.
She and her mother made sure to spread rumors about Kim Jae-soo, painting him as a fool who could be bullied. They ensured his embarrassment even when no one was watching.
People were right that he was a fool. When he had woken up after the drug incident, he regretted it deeply. He felt so much pain but ran away before Baek Ji-Hu woke up and could be disgusted by him.
"He won't know," Kim Jae-soo consoled himself, but he was terribly wrong. After a week of staying home, sick and left to handle his illness alone, he had hoped things would improve. No one cared to check on him, and he hadn't bothered to look at the school forum or the microblog.
Feeling better, he returned to school and tried to talk to his friends, only to be avoided like the plague, not just by his friends but almost the entire school.
"I can't believe he still has the audacity to show his face."
"Wow, I never knew behind an innocent-looking person there is a slut hidden."
"Oh please, that pudgy-looking pig isn't cute, and it's a big shame to whoever slept with that."
Confused, Kim Jae-soo went through his day, trying to talk to his friends, but they didn't even want to breathe the same air as him.
Drained from trying to figure out what was going on, he sat under the tree behind the faculty, staring into space. His phone wouldn't turn on, and he had no way to call his mother as her number wasn't reachable. He had always wanted to apologize, but he couldn't even escape his new birdcage.
"K... Kim Jae-soo," a timid voice stuttered, snapping Kim Jae-soo out of his thoughts. An Na-ri stood in front of him, looking worried.
He had always disliked this person for always showing off his parents' wealth, but now, was he here to mock him when he was down?
"Hm...?" Kim Jae-soo raised a brow in question, causing Na-ri to flinch. Gathering all his courage, Na-ri told the confused Kim Jae-soo what was going on, even showing him the video. Someone had paid to keep it at the top, no matter how many people reported it and wanted it gone.
Kim Jae-soo was speechless as his eyes started to water and he began to shake. His mind raced, foolishly concluding that Ji-Hu would kill him. Seeing his distress, the worried An Na-ri hugged him and offered his favorite chips, hoping to cheer him up.
Realizing that this friend was genuinely trying to help and not showing off, Kim Jae-soo cried loudly into Na-ri's shoulders, soaking them with his tears.
From that day on, they grew closer. Though the video was eventually removed, it still lingered in the whispers of their peers. All of this led to the current situation, locked in the closet, reflecting on how he had ended up here.
People would say he was not a child and shouldn't let himself suffer, but this was what he had been used to since primary school—torture and bullying by children from rich families. He and his mother couldn't do anything about it, and that was why he had started resenting her. When a rich father came and claimed him, he had gladly left, believing it would end his suffering.
In the dark, the ger lost the strength to cry and began scratching open the scars on his wrist, trying to relieve himself from his claustrophobia and fear of the dark. He didn't stop until he felt his fingers wet with blood, and then he fell asleep, too tired to think, hoping he would wake up in the comfort of his mother's arms.
"He locked himself in the closet," Su-Jin's loud voice woke him up. His head felt dizzy as the door was pulled open by his bored-looking father.
The sudden light burned his eyes. His father glanced at his bleeding wrist with no reaction and simply told him to get up, clean himself, and have dinner.
"Don't play too much because you won't be able to explain it," Choi Min-Jun said as Kim Jae-soo staggered away. Su-Jin stomped her feet in anger.
"You don't love me anymore, Dad," she said, but Choi Min-Jun just walked away without replying.
After Kim Jae-soo cleaned himself up, he took a pain reliever and fell asleep, with no one checking on him to see if he was okay.
