Ian teleported onto Aegis, masking his thoughts well and putting up steep defenses in his mind. People didn't think much of it because he was an off-worlder, and they could get self-conscious on Aegis after all. He made his way to the tower where the mind shattering happened.
He watched from a hiding place as his backstabbing colleague got her mind shattered. The mind shattering was done by a teenage boy of all people. Ian's eyebrows shot up. So, this was the one he had come to kill... But he looked so sad about it. His eyes wandered over to the proud man standing behind him. He was completely ignoring the teenager's obvious discomfort. So... It was his fault.
He pulled out a dagger, turning invisible and approaching Viren. Right before he could stab Viren, his hand stopped moving. What the...? His hand dropped the dagger, which turned visible. He abruptly lost his invisibility, and he was restrained. He was knocked out, and the last thing he saw was that boy looking at him...
While he was unconscious, he thought a lot about that kid. How did he know he was there? This kid was so powerful... But he didn't shatter his mind. He could have. Why didn't he?

'Good work, Caleb. You saved my life,' Viren praised. 'Ryan, you should be more like your brother.'
Ryan glanced down.
'What are we going to do with him...?' Caleb asked.
'You'll shatter his mind. He tried to kill me. That's punishable by mind shattering.'
Caleb's eyes widened. He masked his thoughts as they continued eating dinner. He didn't want to shatter Ian's mind... This couldn't be happening.

Ian blinked, slowly waking up in a cell. He saw the teenager flee and smiled slightly to himself. That kid saved him... Why would he do that? He sighed slightly. If the kid saved him, then he wouldn't try to kill Viren again. He owed him that much. He quickly took the opportunity to teleport away before they caught him.

Caleb fled Aegis. It took him several days to reach a few galaxies away, but he couldn't be too careful. If they found him, they would force him to shatter more minds. He found use quickly for his telepath abilties and found his own work. He was completely alone for a long time after that...

"Well, if it isn't you again..." Ian greeted. "It's been a long time. What's your name?"
Caleb eyed him cautiously. '...Caleb. And I know who you are.'
"You can read my mind. You know I don't mean any harm. I know I wasn't the best guy back then, but I'm different now. I have a mission I need your help with. Lives are at stake," Ian explained. "I can't do it without you."
Caleb hesitated. He was sincere... He thought for a moment about Ian's mission.
'Okay. I'll help you.'
Ian grinned. "Great! Come on, I'll explain more."
He led Caleb off, and Caleb hesitantly followed. That was the beginning of a close friendship - the first real friend either of them had in years.
